My search has gotten me to ad mucher and pop up stopper yet both only do so much and do nothing against those active-x pop ups. Disabling active x isnt sumtin i want to do so if any of you know a good and reliable pop up/active-x stopper, please lemme knoe :)
[ timko ]
Why bother searching? I use Opera and I can set it to block unwanted popups. It only shows one that result from me clicking, no advertising spam here :) If you don't like Opera then get one of those IE wrapper browers Avant/MyIE2 etc (or whatever, I dunno cos I use opera)

andrew22
but with firefox, would it actually stop those active-x ones? those tend to give me the most frustration since they enjoy infecting my computer with spyware
Ivand
I look for lyrics a lot, and I've never gotten a popup with firefox :D
FiREFLi
I don't think it's a generic tihng that *all* lyrics websites have active-x popups. Just change to a different lyrics provider website.
slysy
Get spywareblaster. Its perfect for your needs and is freeware http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Firefox would stop them but if you dont want to change browser spywareblaster is ideal Edited June 16, 2004 by slysy

Monkeh
hmm does MyIE2 work well? MyIE2 and Firefox work really well. I've never encountered a single unwanted pop-up after switching to MyIE2.
andrew22
I am well aware that not all lyric sites have them, but my web surfing isn't limited to lyric related websites. Other sites as well have those active-x pop ups so i need a stable program to get them off my comp but your (slysy) program is still pretty cool
cal2002
SP2 should fix the Active-X ones, right?
Malechai Veteran Posted June 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 16, 2004 Internet explorer in XP Service pack 2 has been updated to block popups and activex prompts by default. you'll get exactly what you're looking for once that hits final (or if you're adventuresome, install the RC2 of SP2 thats been released recently to get that updated IE right now)

Si Veteran Posted June 16, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 16, 2004 but with firefox, would it actually stop those active-x ones? Yes, because it doesn't know what ActiveX is, so it ignores them :)
todd
Google Toolbar! Lately, google toolbar's been letting a lot through (even after a fresh windows install) .. and it doesnt do anything to the activex popups
JoDaddy
The "pop-up guys" are changing how they make the pop-ups. I use MyIE2, and the google toolbar with ZoneAlarm, and I'm getting one or two pop-ups a day now. But they're those crazy ones that don't have a window. They just fade in and out. I still reccomend my setup (MyIE2 and Google toolbar with ZoneAlarm), though.

I still reccomend my setup (MyIE2 and Google toolbar with ZoneAlarm), though. With Firefox alone, I haven't been getting any popups at all. Haven't seen an unsolicited pop for months now. Not to simply plug Firefox... but in fact, any of the pop-up blocking browsers or browser embedders should do the same. If you're getting weird pop-ups, I'd use one of the spyware cleaners that have been recommended in this thread, and make sure your Messenger service is disabled (not MSN Messenger, but the actual Windows service called 'Messenger'). sdb815
Yes, that is what the messenger service does. You need to go to control panel>administrative tools>services and set the messenger service to manual or disabled.
