cat ate its own baby gross!

Recommended Posts

Animals usually eat their young when they know there's something wrong with it, it's living conditions aren't suitable, or it's in danger.

Sometimes people fussing over it makes it feel like it's babies are in danger.

the cat prolly had good reasons for eating the baby, like what others here have said. we've managed to get any dead or dying kittens out of the box before the mom could eat them.

I only wish humans followed that natural rule, there would be less retards in this world.

If they did, then Neowin wouldn't have half the population it does. ;)

The cat probably regected it as its offspring. They will do this if they don't smell right. Usually if someone handles the babies they lose the smell the mother cat needs to bond. Next time leave them alone or look afeter the kitten yourself away from the mother.

you touched teh baby kitten didnt you, now that leaves the smell of the human body onto the body of the kitten which makes the cat think that it isnt its own baby & its an impostor so it kills it . so next time the cat has a kitten please dont touch it , let it be atleast 2-3 weeks old before you can touch it , till then you can always tell your lil brotha that it wasnt a kitten rather a squirel & he just saw how being killed & it was how a predator kills it prey , how the wrath of the nature takes place, how bloodbaths happen etc . ( i hope you are getting what i mean !!! ;) ) otherwise show him natgeo channel dude , its full of gore .

The question in now... WHY THE HECK WOULD IT DO THAT?!

Because it's an animal with instincts based on survival. Certain animals will kill their offspring if it feels that they are threatened rather than letting them suffer.

(edit)

I just went back and read some of this thread; for all of you who have had problems with small rodents eating their offspring after they have grown or the male eating them: It is suggested that after the nursing period you remove the children to their own cage to avoid this happening. And when a female becomes pregnant you should (for most rodents) remove the male from the cage.

I'm amazed that you wouldn't do research when your pet has children: I personally freak out. Then learn everything I possibly can about the subject to take as good care of them as I can.

sometimes cats do that, especially if the baby was touched by ppl when it was first born,or the baby kitten's not quite healthy and strong,or the mother feels it's not safe there, sometimes even when there are too many babies(she won't dump it,she just eat it)

but i've never seen a dog did that, cats are very strange sometimes
