Rediff.com offers one GB e-mail space

Recommended Posts

Rediff.com India Ltd has increased the e-mail space provided on its portal for free users to one GB from five MB and that of its premium users to two GB from 10 MB, even as the company hiked the single outgoing and incoming e-mail message size to 10 MB.

"With this increase, we have become the first and the largest e-mail storage provider in the country, and users no longer have to worry about deleting mails to stay within the storage limit, Rediff.com Executive Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer Rohit Varma said in Mumbai on Thursday.

Sending and receiving heavy files upto 10 MB benefit users who want to mail photos, music collections, business presentations and other large attachments, he said.

I've had an active rediffmail account since 2 months. The max inbox size still shows as 5 MB.

Tried to sign up for a new account now, but getting a msg like "An error has occured, try after some time.."

This is just getting silly. Especially if you are limiting attachments to 10 meg. If you are going to give 1 gig or 2 gig, at least allow for 100 meg attachments, minimum. Geesh!

Limiting attachments is fine. These people aren't stupid, they know people are gonna send "special" things using this, especially if there's no attachment limit. (But there's a way around that to if your desperate)

But I think the title of the thread shoulda included "Screw Gmail" :p

geez, what's the whole deal about the damn gmail and their followers? Space? Nah, yahoo just upped their free e-mail to 100Mb, and that's MORE than enough (unless you got a picture-crazy relative who just bought a 5 megapixel camera and sends you 20 pictures a day). Are you going to use it for storage? No, because this is against the company's policy. Name? What's so 'cool' in it? Get a life and stop wasting time writing pointless comments about how happy you would be if you had a gmail account.

Geesh, all these massive storage email services are coming out at once.

"It started with 1 gigabyte with Gmail... It will end with 3 terrabytes with Hotmail..."

jk, i doubt it :)

I seriously doubt Hotmail will ever change. At least until Gmail offically launches. I mean Yahoo is Hotmail's main "free" competition. And they upped to 100 megs free. I would expect Hotmail to increase to at least the same, maybe 150 megs to make it look different. But I just don't see it happening. To many people use Hotmail, it would be insane.

Most people don't realise that you can easily set up a POP and SMTP server (providing your ISP allows you to) on your own harddrive; your email space is limited only by your free harddrive space.

I think a jump to 100 meg is totally doable for the free side and a reasonable approach. Perhaps 50 meg is even more realistic for Hotmail. But I think 100 meg with a 10 meg attachment limit for the free version of Hotmail would be a solid challenge to Yahoo, especially if Hotmail continues to not attach that text advertisement on each message like Yahoo does.

I do think 1 gig is not as meaningful if you leave the attachment limit at 10 meg. That way 1 gig feels like fluff and not a real useful tool. But if you had 100 meg attachments and 1 or 2 gig of space, I think that would make a bigger impact.

With hard drives being so cheap nowadays, I think the time is right to move to larger free mail offerings. It makes sense on a price per megabyte basis, don't you think? I do think that Yahoo's $19 a year plan is a very healthy competitive standard though. Only thing it lacks is larger attachment sizes. Other than that, they throw in a lot of useful things, including the ability to check Yahoo mail from your pop3 email client. The only one that can check Hotmail is Outlook and Outlook Express, I think, and that limits Hotmail's appeal somewhat.

I got a Gmail account, and its cool. I like the interface and features. I didn't get it for the size. I don't think I will ever use 5mbs of space with it. I just wanted to see what all the hype was about it. Its not that hard to get one. Took me about 30 minutes and I asked like 3 people and got 2 invites.

I don't think that is a realistic option for many of us. Static IP's are not free usually and many of the user terms just don't allow for that. Plus, who wants to administer their own email server? It's not like there are that many FREE Turnkey downloads for that sort of thing, right?

While 100, or even 50 megs is a possible future hotmail storage option, I just don't see it happening until Gmail is out to the general public. For now Hotmail is happy with giving what they have, and most people are happy with it.

Now with Rediff, it's perfect for them. You have one of the most populated countries on Earth, more and more people online, and the first to offer 1GB in said country. Perfect advertising line, and the media will go with it. They are one of a kind in India, even if they aren't one of a kind on the planet. Heh.

It does kind of freak me, all the hype about Gmail. I don't get it. It hasn't even come out yet and people are paying money on Ebay for test accounts. Unreal.

too many ads, looks like yahoo mail

What ads? I don't see a single ad except for the linkback ones?

And yes, the obsession with Gmail is amazing. $20 on ebay for something that'll be free? Bleech.
