Rediff.com offers one GB e-mail space

Other than that, they throw in a lot of useful things, including the ability to check Yahoo mail from your pop3 email client.

You can check your Yahoo! acct. from a POP3 server by using this little program called Yahoo! POPs (http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/) which apparently is legal. Useful little thing.

EDIT : Im dure rediff wont be able to cope with the sudden increase in users, its gonna bomb out like spymac. Naybe not as badly, because there are a much bigger corporation, but they will bomb all the same.

ive been a rediffmail user since the last 1 year & i have not had any probs with it, its plain , fast & simple , infact it barley takes abt 2-3 seconds to log me in as compared to hotmail ( 20-30 seconds ) or yahoo ( hell i dont even use it ) , i didnt really expect such a thing coming out of an indian email service provider but hey i just got lucky .

here is the mail i got form them confirming the news :

Ah, speaking of which, my Rediff account just got upgraded to 1GB/10MB attachment. Sweet. And the site is just as fast as it has been. Loads nearly instantly.

I still think gmail will be more reliable than this service

Maybe I'm talkin' too much, but this thread interests me.

I think that reliability may be the key. Yahoo and Hotmail have established reps. These others are just bandwagon jumpers. I swear, I've had more trouble with Spymac and their free 1 gig stuff than almost any service in years. Only thing that works like it should seems to be the 100 meg of free web space that I access via an FTP program. The gallery, blog and especially the email not only lack features, but they don't work reliably at all most of the time. Their email is pretty useless because it don't work often enough. I feel like I wasted my time with them. Put a bad taste in my mouth. I think that kind of experience may be enough to drive folks back to the big 2, soon to be 3 including Gmail.

I use Outlook Express 6, and that way I don't have to login. I have it set to check mail like ever 5 or 10 minutes or whatever and it just does it in the background for me and if there is mail an icon shows up in the system tray. If it were not for that, I may not be so pleased with Hotmail, but I am for the most part.

Yes but Spymac is a huge site.

I'll agree that they lack features, but for free I can't really complain. The speeds are horrible most of the time. And the UI is nasty bad (do MAC users really like that kinda look? lol) but it is free.

But in the end, companies like Rediff and Aventuremail etc, have all been around a long time already and are just throwing their hat into the big email bin. I see nothing but good competition.

I guess I don't like Spymac too because they are all snooty and they look down on non-mac people. I like the web space because I don't have to even visit the stupid looking Spymac site. You are right. The speeds are horrible and the graphics on that site are just huge and not very sleek at all. All I have to do to use the web space is fire up WS_FTP or another FTP program and logon. Works fine. But their email, which you can set on pop3 and avoid their site, hardly ever works right. What a waste.

Well you guys have to think about it, in 6 months how many of these places are going to still be around? Just like with the You've got post incident, people lost all the crap they had stored and they had no warning.

What ads? I don't see a single ad except for the linkback ones?

And yes, the obsession with Gmail is amazing. $20 on ebay for something that'll be free? Bleech.

there is 2 ads

1 is the shop till u drop (big ads located to the right of the site)

2 is the matchmaker one

LOC, one out of the topic question:

When you can make the ads not show up in the browser level itself, why install a program for that purpose?

Because the Proxomitron is a kitchen sink app. It works not only for IE but for Opera, FF, Moz too. It blocks ads (every single one) popups (I haven't seen a popup in over a year) web bugs, practically everything. If you use advanced filters it makes browsing an absolute pleasure again.

As for the question your getting at :p I don't use Moz or FF or Opera mainly because I like IE, and I won't be changing anytime soon. (That doesn't mean I don't use them, just not as my default browser)

Well gmail does it fine for me - it's fast, reliable, and I've yet to see a single ad (whether it be text or banner)! I thought they would have those google text ads but no. Ah well. And yes space was the main thing for me to get a gmail account, I do quite a lot of composition, and it's very useful to have somewhere to store previous versions of a work (as one ends up saving over an older version to avoid having 100 files by the time the piece is finished) so as to have an overview of the progress of the composition. Also, the gmail "conversation" sorting means it's very nice in that aspect too.

,Jun 17 2004, 17:01] An email address with @rediff.com at then end? Yeah that's really catchy (N)

I agree. to many companies are coming out with 1gb now to battle gmail but no real threats yet. yahoo's 100mb free one sounds kinda promising but I am yet to wait for hotmail to release one.

Yeah, but 1 GB is pretty useless if all attachments are limited to 10 MB, 100 MB is fine for me, though on March 31st you wouldve found me saying that 20 MB was more than any one could want. There's a little saying for times like there : When it rains it freaking pours!!
