[jon]
As per title: Where would we be without it? -- I shudder to think! Earlier today, I was scouring the web with my trusty friend google on the hunt for a MIDI file for my keyboard.... Wait? What's that I see? Appears to be my MIDI file waiting for me :woot: on a erm.. slightly psychadelic badly coded forum :o ah who cares, ill just grab my file at leave these peasants to live in their own filth - i'll just click this download button and .... :pinch: ok i have to register to download - not a problem i say! a ridiculously long and troubled registration process later, FINALLY i get the confirmation email and go back to download my file - again I just click this link and... :pinch: now i need "25 megabyte dollars" (WTF ) apparently to download this file and i can earn this ridiculously stupidly-named currency by posting on the forums... Some "LOL" spamming in the jokes forum later and I get my file... That was a horrific experience. Let it never happen. It made me appreciate just how good neowin is - i will never forget those ridiculous garish colours and great swaths of popups attacking my computer screen  Remember Kids, if anyone ever offers you another forum.... ZTrang
A very nice post. Yes, I am appreciative of the straightforwardness of Neowin, the lack of pop-ups and minimal ads, and the multitude of posters who make this forum vibrant. I've tried other forums, but they're all dry and stale. You don't get anywhere near the participation on other forums that you do on Neowin. [jon]
What made me laugh is that I needed $25Mb (25 megabyte dollars) to download a file -- by browsing the forum, I saw just how much spam was made by people with a "megabyte dollar balance" of $25Mb - they had spammed the forum to earn some $Mb, grabbed their file and quit... Of course every forum has this - even neowin, by browsing the member list you can see thousands of people with postcounts of 0, whats good about neowin is that people arent FORCED into posting like on that forum... People are treated the same no matter what their postcount is, its the quality of their contributions that count...

Rivers
lol!! yeah I agree with Neowins straight forwardness and also the relaxed rules we now have. The only other forum I read/go to is a certain very popular bit torrent site and god it makes me laugh just how many petty stupid rules they have. The mods here (yeah they have their off days lol) are not power mad either and are quite relaxed too.. and pretty darn helpful at times :p All hail Neowin!!!! :D

I created a website for a Celtic band in Western New York and as soon as the forums went online, the fans ate it up! I've heavily modified it with mods like "fake currency for posts", but nothing where they have to have X amount of "cash" to do something they want. I've got a "shop" where they can buy things with the currency they accumulate from posts and they seemed to like it for a while, but it eventually lost its novelty and the "shop" doesn't get much use anymore. I also use IPB and an expanded SSI mod as a Content Management System for several other sites I've developed. Clients who are, shall we say, less than Net savvy appreciate that they can just hit "New Post" and it's instantly output onto their website. Anyway, I had to reply to your post. As a user, I hate hate hate having to jump through multiple hoops just to get onto a forum and participate or download something. As a web developer, I hate to put my (or my clients') end users through the same kind of hell. In short, yes. Thank [insert favorite patron diety here] for Neowin! Straight forward, informative and just plain fun. :)

At the end of the day it all comes down to easy of navigation and how to get the data you want when you want it - after all thats the point of the web. Nowadays, if people cant find what they want within a timeframe of say... 10mins, theyll just give up and go elsewhere... ive seen this especially with online shops with difficult navigation systems... you need to go 20 pages deep just to get some pics of some pencils you want to buy -- by this point, most visitors will have just buggered off elsewhere... That's one of the most important things you have to remember when designing webpages and providing internet services. If you want customers to shop, then the site needs to be as simple as possible and not confused with many pages or over-designed techniques. If the customer gets annoyed with confusion or too bored or could not find the information they wanted to see, then yes, they will go somwhere else.
