Gmail easter egg?

Recommended Posts

A friend of mine invited me to use gmail.

But another friend of mine used up his invites trying to register every name I'd want to use.

So out of desperation I started trying stuff like "scruffymcgee".

Well when I checked for the availablitlity of "scruffymcgee" it returned "Limerick is available."

Is this an easter egg? Is the name scruffymcgee from a limerick?

Needless to say I promptly registered limerick. It was available.

Go figure.

It just recommends something related to what you wanted. Being Google, it surely doesn't want to follow Yahoo or MSN footsteps which recommends the typical reply of "scruffymcgee2004", "scruffymcgee01" when the username is taken or not available.

You don't understand how the registration page works.

If the username you select is not available it says "blah blah blah is not available but these are:" and lists some delineations of whatever you tried.

If it is available it says in big blue letters "blah blah blah is available!"

When I tried scruffymcgee it said "Limerick is available!".

Now I tried it several times and it always returned that Limerick was available when I tried scruffymcgee.

That's out of the ordinary.

I got my GMail a long long long long time ago... and i registered 4 gmail accounts for my family. So i do know how the registration page works. Perhaps more than you.

The reason i said so was, certain keywords that i tried, it showed me something related. Something like your examples. I dont recall what i used. It was like a few months back.

Uhm, if you want to say this is an easter egg... i suppose you could say that in a way.

umm, I searched for "scruffymcgee@gmail.com" and it said "scruffymcgee is available" not "Limerick is available", so I have no idea what you're talking about.

I've had the same thing happen before, but it never returns the same error a few times in a row.

My point exactly.... it's kinda random at times. Besides, google is still in beta. Easter eggs? IMHO, i think it's still too early for that, prehaps later.

Well limerick isn't available now.

I want to know why it didn't tell me that scruffymcgee was available.

And I said "friend" out of habit. He isn't one.

Yeah i noticed the same thing with another name.. i forgot what name i put.. but when i pressed the button, it said a different account name was available.. i just shrugged it off..

But what he means is:

When you go to enter your account name, there is a quick button available to see if its in use. It gives you an editbox and the @gmail.com in text.. so you can type the username that you want. Then you hit the button that says "Check availability" (or something similar.. i forgot what it looks like). Hes saying he put in "scruffymcgee" and normally, it shouldve said "scruffymcgee is available." but instead it said "Limerick is available."

That doesn't have the ear marks of a database burp, seems much more intentional.

Where does "Scruffy McGee" come from anyway?
