Last night, I saw on Dateline, he gave about $24 billion (give or take a couple of million) to help get rid of AIDS in Africa; and allowed his father to distribute the money.

So yeah, I would imagine he has the money. It would be nice to have that kind of income... even for a week. :ponder:

Errmmmm, just a point about some this money Bill has given to schools and the third world and stuff. A lot of this has been in so called free software. Yeah, and the cost of his donation has been calculated from the retail price of the software... see where I'm headin? So what is claimed to be say $1000 dollars worth of software would actually have cost Bill, well, how much do a few CDs cost to burn?!! So be careful how you look at those figures, especially if the source is MS!

In fact, ALL of that money has actually been a very kind donation from all of the good decent folks who OVERpaid for their MS software, and the taxpayers, customers, clients etc etc who pay for the software of the businesses they pay bills to, seein as the customer eventually pays for business software at the end of the day, and for which they get tax breaks! SO ALL PAT YOURSELVES ON THE BACK FOR ALL THE MONEY YOU HAVE INDIRECTLY GIVEN AND CONTINUE TO GIVE TO CHARITY VIA GOOD 'OL BILL!!! :D

Nice idea but it wouldn't be quite that simple. If you stop destroying the rainforest, it would destroy the economy of several countries, and many many people who work harvesting the forest would be out of a job and could starve.

I'm not saying it we shouldn't stop destroying our natural resources, I'm just saying that if you stop cold turkey, it will create havok. It's a vicious circle.

So you think that Bill Gates gives all this money away because he is a nice man LOL!

This is a wellknown tax trick,ok?

He dont have to pay tax if it goes to charity, idiots!

2:Because Microshit is always sued he has to do something so that he looks good for you.

3:Linus thorvalds the man behind Linux gave it away for FREE!

he could make billions on that OS!

Dont you judge that guy!

Though I'm sure his charity is tax deductable... I'm willing to bet that he's losing more money than saving from those tax deductions from giving away all that money.

I don't think he'd do it. Why? He just bought all that land in Washinton state and finished building that huge house. I doubt he'd want to build another house in the rainforest. Think of the deal he just missed. He bought all that land for a few million just to get a house. Meanwhile, he could have bought a whole FOREST, build a huge house, burnt it all down and sold it as commerical, industrial and residential land. I'd be peeved as well. :D

Seriously, this is a great cause to give to but ultimately its his choice on how to spend the money. A petition will hardly help. I'm sure he gets many similar requests every day.

Without the rainforest a few hundred species will die off.

The number is actually not in the hundreds but more than likely in the thousands or tens of thousands. Scientists, have no estimate as to how many species actually exist in the rain forest and in many cases every few acres has new species - all from the ground all the way up to the top of the trees. Insects and plants are particullary diversified in the area.
