Future of Gmail?

Dare I try to ask a legitimate Gmail question???

Well, here goes....

Question - I was wondering what people's thoughts are on the future of Gmail. I currently have an account and I must say I really like it. But all the information I read and all the faq's I read, indicate that Gmail is an experiment and currently being tested to an undetermined date. There is no mention of what happens to Gmail after the experiment/beta phase. Obviously the intent would be to make this service available to everyone, but how realistic is that? Is this more of an experiment like I read sometimes, or is the more a beta phase before actually be released to the general public.

Serious replies only please (like thats gonna happen)

Well a lot of Google's products are still in beta and were already out before officially being listed on Google's website.

Services such as froogle or news.google.com were very experimental and are still in beta stages, however they aren't cancelled.

So will gmail be cancelled, most likely not. There is always a possibility but that is a very small one. Google's majority of products outside its search engine are all beta.

I'll echo every one of those flames in the first post. Gmail isn't some sort of "experiment" done just for fun. Google is in the business to make money, and when gmail goes public, they will. They wouldn't pass up an opportunity like that.

Although gmail is in beta phase, that doesnt mean it will go out when the user feedback is over.

Secondly many other email provider has now started offering mail box of gb size, so once officially launched they will have two options a) make it paid mailbox and offer a smaller mailbox for free

b) stay as it is and offer everything for free, and charge advertisers for their advertisements in gmail.

Gmail Future?... i don't think much can be updated or added. Maybe a few blogging tools incorporated into the email...like you ordinarily send out an email, it insteads used as the blogger tool.

But what i think Google might go into after the Gmail project would be instant messaging (IM). Similar concept.... deliver ads based on the text... :)

The way I look at it, with Neowin here, GMail will never go out of business. They will always have a shot at making money. :p Have you done a search for the word GMail on the Neowin Forums... Dare you? ;) Food for thought.

I have, and I agree its a bit overkill, hence the comments at the beginning of my post. I was just wondering what people think and have heard about the future of GMail. Obviously GMail is very popular right now (in a testing/beta phase) it makes me wonder how crazy it will be when its available to everyone. I read a report where Hotmail is thinking about or has increased the storage limit to 25MB. That doesn't really compare to the 1000 MB that GMail gives you. Will Google be able to support that (assuming the storage limit stays the same)?

Yahoo is 100MB, that's more than enough - comparable size to Gmail in terms of emails, 10MB size limit on incoming/outgoing emails. The reason I prefer gmail is because it's so much simpler and faster to use, so many little features that make it worth using over yahoo.

I seriously hope they won't cancel it, I'm using it as an online HD!

Ok think about this for one moment.

Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, and ETC companies have been bidding for the technology, Fighting with google on how it should SELL SELL SELL.

The real question is this, 'what kind of experiment was it?'.

One to find out how the media would react to such things as "1gb storage"

Or to find out how the competitors would?

Very good questions huh?

Yahoo goes to 100meg (free) 2gb (premium)

MSN (working on it)

I truelly thank google for what they did, giving people what they want. Just by making a public beta of something no company wanted.

I'm love'n it. Or is that Mc Donalds.....

I guess Google scares the **** out of MS and yahoo and other paid mail providers with this action, and guess google thought on this realy well, but now they put such many time and effort in developing Gmail and a complete marketing plan around it, I don't think they will cancel it.. if you only see how many attention the company has generated by only telling they would offer such thing. Besides that this was also very good for their name, though canceling such project won't be

Way to go Google (Y)
