em_te
I read in a book that human and ape DNA differ only by 2% which is evidence that we evolved from our ape primates. But it doesn't mention about any comparisons of humans with other animals. What happens if human and frog DNA differed only by 3%? T-Grey
umm, you're right I think we're only 5% different (maybe less) from worms the genetic code is universal, so the DNA sequence that codes for a certain protein in humans codes for the same protein in fish, worms, birds, frogs, monkeys, single celled organisms, etc. It's all proof that all life came from a singular organism. ev0|
I think the differences between humans and ALL mammals is only like 2 percent... What will be interesting to see if how much human dna and alien dna differs. Since we'll all be long dead by the time we meet actual alien lifeforms, we'll probably never know. :alien:
Gabureiru
Maybe this is interesting, but when the GNome project was done. They found out that we humans among ourselvs have a 99.99% difference in DNA. That means that, hair color, height, eye color, skin color is only .01% different from each other. What little things we go to war for...... T-Grey
also remember that there are 3 billion letters in the human genome. Therefore a 2% difference is still a few million million nucleotide (letter) difference and that .01% difference between two humans is still 3 million nucleotides, more than enough to give you a genetic fingerprint to be used for crime scene stuff. em_te
So then an ape is really just more than halfway between a human and a worm? If the numbers are really that small between all species then why do they use so few decimal places? Saying 2% makes it sound really significant when it isn't. Maybe they should remake the scale to make it sound more reasonable like 30% for human-ape and 80% for human-worm.

slowestborg
So then an ape is really just more than halfway between a human and a worm?If the numbers are really that small between all species then why do they use so few decimal places? Saying 2% makes it sound really significant when it isn't. Maybe they should remake the scale to make it sound more reasonable like 30% for human-ape and 80% for human-worm. You cant really do that. Most of the genes code for proteins and enzymes that are similar for many species. So you have many similar proteins/enzymes as in the worm. Only thing is that the action of these proteins can be different in worms that in humans. They are similar but dont act the same. Look at it this way, there are 3 billion base pairs. That analogous to 3 Gigabytes of data. with a 2% difference, there would be 60MB of difference. That 2 % is the fundamental difference that makes us human and apes be apes. EDIT: more thoughts added In fact, gene for gene humans are also quite similar to mice. That's why mice models are used for lab testing. There is an average of 85% similarity, but there is still a lot of variation. Also, its technically wrong to say that we share over 98% of our genes with apes. Or that there is only 2% difference. It should be that there is around 95-98% similarity between related genes in humans and apes. Edited June 25, 2004 by slowestborg
