about "Post your..." threads

Recommended Posts

Recently certain threads have been closed because mods say "no post your... threads are allowed," like the post your system specs thread for example.

But as I am about to show you there are hundreds of threads just like these allowed to stay open. I understand why you don't want threads like this for certain reasons, but you need to set a standard and go by it all the time. The way the moderating goes here it is completely unorganized and totally random. One thread will be made and closed because a mod doesn't think it should exist, like the post your pc specs thread. But, a few months from now someone will start the exact same thread and it will be allowed to stay open.

for the mods who say there are no post your... threads allowed then why are these still open?

here are a few examples:

Post a clip of your voice!

Post your fav tattoo

Post Your Funniest Pictures ... Again!

Post a pic of your name-brand mods

post your Case mod lighting pics

post your pixel errors here

Post Your Digital Music Collection

Post Your Favorite Computer Pranks

Post Your Favorite Pics Here 2 Get Photoshopped!

the staff expect the members to all follow the rules, but how can you expect this when the mods don't even follow the rules they make?

the staff here are who set the standards for the members, and when there isn't even any organization between the entire staff you bring about so many more problems than you need.

I'm sure this thread will be closed but understand that it isn't always the members at fault here. the mods need to set a constant standard and not deviate from it.

Heh. Congratulations mods. You just got pwned.

One of the many reasons I don't post here...people that can't agree on anything.

Not all post your threads are disallowed. Only the pointless one are disallowed. Like the dead pixel one.

Exactly. No one got owned. We, as staff, know the rules more indepth than you and know that not all Post Your threads are disallowed. Also, instead of publicly complaining, you could use the neat little "report" button if you think a thread needs to be closed or moderated. We keep telling you guys this, but it seems no one listens.

not to be picky but do the mods really feel that "post your pixel errors" (https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=180741) has a point? definately a completely pointless thread imo however some "post your" threads that i have enjoyed reading have been closed for what i see as no apparent reason.

thanks stevofc for highlighting one of the problems i feel exists in the board, this isnt the first time ive experienced these faults either however you have raised the point in a much better way than i ever did.

hope you guys make your mind up and either allow the users to decide what post your threads are relevant or completely disallow them.

Well, the problem is moderating is highly objective and with as many mods as we have, it's hard to form a common decision about a lot of things. Also, we literally cannot view every thread on the board for moderator approval. Moderating is essentially reactive, not proactive. We would have to mod-queue every forum, and with 7000+ posts a day, that's a LOT of queued posts to look over :s

I understand the problem, but there isn't a system in place to support a fully effective change. Perhaps some sort of reorganization is in order, but I'm not in any position to make that sort of decision.

The "no post your...." rule was implemented to cover the more absurd topics that were cropping up at the time. For a while we had members making such ridiculous topics as "post your carpet" and "post your toilet". Obviously, these kinds of posts are just plain stupid and offer nothing of value to the forums. Do not assume that because a thread has the words "post your" in it, it is violating our rules. This is not the case. It was never intended to be a "blanket" rule.

We as moderators decide what is and what is not appropriate.

Ahh I say just let the mods do what they want. Though I don't see how " Post a clip of your voice!" "Post your fav tattoo" offers "value to the forums". But that's just me.

exactly my point of the way the mods here set the standards...

Well of course we do. Regardless of whether you like it or not, WE set the rules here. It is up to you to follow them.

If you don't like them then don't participate. Just use your bloody common sense here people. So long as they are not downright stupid or disruptive to the forums then there is nothing wrong with said topics.

except in 6 out of 9 mentioned threads moderators posted themself

so there is no excuse in saying that those threads were missed moderation becuase of high volume of posts.

Ok, all of these hasn't been touched in at least 3 days, so they're essentially dead. You want us to go back and moderator on 3 week old threads?

Tell me how these aren't relevant and are just spam threads? We have a member pics threads, so a voice thread seems appropriate. Funniest Pictures is a long running thread that just happens to have "post your" in the title. Funny picutres breed in forums, so it makes sense to have that here. And the case mod pics in the case mod section? Um, isn't that impled?

StevoFC: I think you're confusing what the Post Your "rule" really is. It's not a rule, it's a clarification of the spam rule that Neobond made during a period when these threads were popping up all over and flooding the forums. Requesting members to post things can be relevant (the desktops threads are essentially "post your desktop"), but having those things be toilets or left sock or whatever isn't. It never was really a rule, it was a public statement to get people to stop posting sh*t. Same reason why have the Ads Bitching thread pinned in this forum. Don't take this as "post a thread with 'post your' in the title and get banned', take it as "lots of these 'post your' threads are turning out to be spam. stop it!"

MxxCon: I'm not saying all, I'm saying some. I already referenced why I think those threads are OK. See the last paragraph for why I think people are taking this "rule" as something else than what it is.

I've never understood why these type of threads bother people. I for one enjoy looking through the post your workstation and post your funniest picture threads. I'll plug in my mic later on and say something for the post your voice thread.
