JadeWolf324
why do people care so much?! are you a mod? are those threads harming you? i rather like them, they add flavor to the forum...lets us get to know our fellow community-dwellers dont you agree? :D
Chode
Recently certain threads have been closed because mods say "no post your... threads are allowed," like the post your system specs thread for example.the staff expect the members to all follow the rules, but how can you expect this when the mods don't even follow the rules they make? the staff here are who set the standards for the members, and when there isn't even any organization between the entire staff you bring about so many more problems than you need. I'm sure this thread will be closed but understand that it isn't always the members at fault here. the mods need to set a constant standard and not deviate from it. Yes sir, Mr Neobond.....err NOT! God forbid that the moderators here are human beings... well, except for Radish. The jury is still out on what he is

Steven P. Administrators Posted June 26, 2004 Administrators Share Posted June 26, 2004 exactly my point of the way the mods here set the standards... Actually the mods set the standards of the community wishes and from time to time they follow the wishes of the admins here. As people should know the admins of Neowin never impose standards upon the forums unless its warranted. Far be it for me to repeat whats already been said but the only difference here is that "Post your Carpet..." type threads are simply not allowed anymore because it caused alot of problems among the community and these threads simply disrupt the forums. Other Post your.. threads have been allowed if they contribute. If a moderator closes a Post your.. thread and you feel that this was unwarranted action you are free to contact both the moderator in question and an admin to reverse the decision. Its impossible to make everyone happy but I feel we went with the majority when we imposed this lax rule.
Wannes
true. a "Post your workstation" thread does belong to the community as this is a tech forum.
Banzai
The "no post your...." rule was implemented to cover the more absurd topics that were cropping up at the time. For a while we had members making such ridiculous topics as "post your carpet" and "post your toilet". Obviously, these kinds of posts are just plain stupid and offer nothing of value to the forums. Do not assume that because a thread has the words "post your" in it, it is violating our rules. This is not the case. It was never intended to be a "blanket" rule.We as moderators decide what is and what is not appropriate. so why is a post your spec thread not appropriate, this is a tech website? Steven P. Administrators Posted June 26, 2004 Administrators Share Posted June 26, 2004 so why is a post your spec thread not appropriate, this is a tech website? I dont see him saying its not appropriate and as I have already said don't break this discussion down into small case by case points, do the right thing and bring an individual case to a moderator and/or admins attention where it will be dealt with via PM. We have rules about bringing this type of discussion up in the forums, its not welcome for the reasons given above.

biorK
Well, I guess we got our answer on this question. I don't bother of these "post your.." threads, if you don't like them, avoid them. Simple as that. And now we know it's not a rule itself. :)

Keldyn
so why is a post your spec thread not appropriate, this is a tech website? I never said it wasn't. My complaint was that people only look as far as the topic title without even considering the content. I'm not going to repeat what has already been said, but if the content is relevant to the forums then there is no reason why it should be removed. +StevoFC MVC Posted June 26, 2004 Author MVC Share Posted June 26, 2004 Well of course we do. Regardless of whether you like it or not, WE set the rules here. It is up to you to follow them. i was refering to the fact he posted that hand picture telling a member that he basically doesn't want him to post. i see your point saying no pc specs threads should exist because we can post it in our sigs, but why have a member photos thread then since we can post our picture in our profile? i'm just trying to point out that there is absolutely no standardization of rules here. Wannes
those member threads are there because not everyone looks at member profiles all the time, i don't know about you but i don't look at them unless i need something (like birthday). the members thread brings together all the "users behind the nick". it's a good way of seeing who's behind the nickname. for pc specs, i really couldn't care less what specs someone else has on their computer. +StevoFC MVC Posted June 26, 2004 Author MVC Share Posted June 26, 2004 it makes no difference what each person "cares about." I personally don't mind these types of threads. i'm just trying to get across that when there are specific rules they should be followed by everyone including the mods. There are no specific rules when it comes to Post your threads.. I think this has been said a number of times in this thread already so please don't start sounding like a broken record because its already been explained in depth. Seems you have a big problem with this so either get to the point or drop it. Thanks :)

Keldyn
Rules are not always so black and white. I have said this many times before and this case is no exception. Think of them more as guidelines. Moderators set an example of what is and is not appropriate and we expect you all to keep that in mind when posting.
FaRSightxc2
As someone that has been here a little while, I was here when the 'No more Post Your...' threads rule was originally implemented. (Or at least made more abundently clear to us normal members). It came about because things were getting stupid. There was a sudden influx of 'Post Your....' threads which cumulated in a 'Post Your Rack' thread. Amusing, yes, but one of about 30 or so open threads at the time that were all completely useless. The rule was then introduced to put a stop to these threads, and its use is continuded today. Now the 'rules' (or so it seems to me) are as follows: Pointless, immature, or 'Post Your....' threads that have no real value for the community are locked, whilst other more valid ones are allowed. This is much the same with any other type of thread, really, its just the 'Post Your....' threads were singled out because (as I said earlier) there was a time when the General Discussion was absolutely full of them. Basicly: If its deemed pointless it is locked, if it is deemed usefull, interesting or is valid for another reason then it stays open. Simple. Hope that has clarified further what the mods and admins have been saying so far in this thread. :) Edited June 27, 2004 by farsightxc2
