I want to buy a place in the US

Recommended Posts

Hmmm, Don't you need some kind of permit(visa) in order to move into U.S and work there?

I don't know.... Illegal immigrants get treated better than you'd think in the good ol' US of A.

Before I made a decision I would look heavily into what jobs are open in the areas you are looking at. I enjoy working in Chicago and living in Indiana (30 minute commute). 6% tax and things are fairly affordable... I'll have to look some prices up to give you a comparison.

i think cali would be too expensive

chino hills - 1 bedroom apartment, 1 uncovered parking space, unfurnished, you pay utility bill yourself - $1,300 per month

not so good area of LA - 1 bedroom apartment, possibility of a covered parking space, comes w/ refrigerator, some utility is paid - $600+

I agree with all the other people that have said come to Canada. I think you should try travelling to the major cities first before making a decision though (although Vancouver's awesome  ) But just a question...how do you plan on moving here? You need some sort of permit/visa don't you? Or do you have family here?

Is DSL a rip off like it is in UK?

How much is it in the UK? Here it's about $40 a month (regular price, but they have deals where it's $25 a month for a year, etc). It's the same with cable.

For $40 a month in the UK you could get 512/256 with a bandwidth limit and a year contract.

iiNet (www.iinet.net.au) is updating it's 512+ plan next month (July). Currently it's 32gb quota p/m for $79.99, but next month it's going unlimited :D. I've been on for ages, it's well worth it, and they're always improving it.

us universities tend to have better staff too, as they can afford them :(

Exactly. I went to Lancashire University Open day - The tutor that was supposed to show us the ropes wasn't their.

Houston is only good because the land value is low. Other then that I hate it here. I think Houston is one of the most poorly organized cities in the US, there is no zoning whatsoever.

I suggest San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. The land value might be higher there but life is also much better (culturally speaking).

Cost-Of-Living here in Greenville, SC is very cheap! My apartment is only $409/month, and is in an excellent location. Gasoline is currently $1.69/gallon. Sales tax is 5%, and they even repeal that for one or two weekends in August. The Blue Ridge Mtns. are 30 minutes away (there is even a mountain in the city), and Myrtle Beach is only 3 hours away. Greenville is located between Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. Greenville is home to the North American headquarters of Michelin, and BMW's U.S. manufacturing facility. Once known as the "textile capital of the world", Greenville is now moving towards international business and high tech manufacturing. The International Center for Automotive Research is now under construction. Greenville may also be the only city in the U.S. with a waterfall in its downtown. :D

Hate to burst your bubble but that isn't necessarely true. The universities with the best staff are often private schools that cost *a lot*. Harvard Law is around $56,000! In the University of Texas, you may have fees in excess of around $10,000 but there are so many students that you are just a number, not a name.

The best public schools here don't come cheap either, the University of California at Berkeley will punch you at $28,000 if you're an out-of-state resident with in-state tuition being around $18,000. Ivy-League schools are the most expensive with most being above $30,000.

No, I don't have fmaily here. I don't really know how i'm going to get there......i'll manage somehow. Anything to get away from here.

wait your 16 and going to university next year?

Yes, I am one of the youngest people in my school year. A week older and I would have been in the previous year.

Therefore, I am 17 on August 23rd 2004 and in 2005 I will be 17 - just before going to university.

Seriously now - Start planning straight away. There's nothing worse than missing out vital bits which can f*ck everything else up. Cover ALL aspects before you even consider moving anywhere.

There's factors like, getting the Visa - Actually being allowed to stay in the country

Getting a job - Unless you get a Student Visa and go to university their

Having a stable income - Don't get so f*cked over when you're skint with a **** job

Have a backup plan - Don't like it? Then have a place to go if you decide to head back home

That's just a few factors that I can think about right now... Good luck though - Would love to hear the stories if you went ahead

You really should have considered going to university in the states/Canada to get a taste for what it's like.

There is time yet for that - and i'm considering it :shifty:

I want to study computer engineering. I do not have A-level maths. What qualifications do you need in Canada to do this? What universities are there that offer this course?
