El Bourricot
I'd suggest staying in UK until you graduate - English unis are so much cheaper than US, as you must know it's only ?1100 pa (going up to 3000 in 2006). If you want a clean country go to Austria or Switzerland:DD It's very important that you get a visa before considering moving over to the Americas - the UK is one of the countries who's exceeded its green card quotas. That means basically good luck with that! Also, I've heard that places over the Atlantic for overseas students have a 1/30 success rate. Weigh all that in, especially since you don't have A2 maths - maths from what I gathered is quite important for computer engineering. But seriously, stay in the UK for your degree! It will make things so much easier. And remember, in the US the legal age for drinks is 21;))
BiGMaN
Do college in the US and make some friggin' friends here. Stay in a dorm and get to know some place. You'll have to pay an arm and a leg to do college here, but if you wanna live in the US, that'd be a GREAT way to get to know it. Hell, you can do a semester and then go somewhere else if you don't like it. There are lots of great engineering universities where you will not need perfect grades. My advice is to go to a big university. OR, go to college in the UK, then study abroad for a year or two - that might be cheaper depending on the plan. Just my 2 cents... -BiGMaN
Max Veteran Posted June 27, 2004 Author Veteran Share Posted June 27, 2004 Well I have to finish college here, and that will end next May. I do get the option of a one year work placement 'overseas' if I study for computer engineering. Should be good :) I think I will graduate over here in the UK, and the move....as I will have plenty of time to think about it and I will be over 18 - meaning the parents can't stop me :shifty: The places you have all suggested look very nice! I'm leaning towards Montreal, Quebec in Canada like xplatinum said earlier. It looks very nice and very cheap - my main concern now is jobs. I take no virtually interest in anything other than the general PC engineering or wherever my degree will take me. If I can get that sorted i'm a happy person :)

fuel925
Hey,I am 16 years old and I am currently studying ICT and AVCE Business Studies, along with my CompTIA A+ and N+ which I study at home. In a year's time, I will be going to university - hopefully to study Computer Engineering for 3/4 years. After that, I want to move. My first point to be made is Tax. If you know me that well on these forums you will know that I am anti-UK and I love slagging off my own country. We have 17.5% VAT on all goods. Some parts of the US have 15% I think and some parts have between 2% and 5%. Our government likes to use discrimination a lot. We are also connned on many, many different items that some of us HAVE to use everyday (e.g: petrol). Another thing I would like to point out is the atmosphere: rubbish. We pay so much to our government - and our streets are not even swept properly. My road gets cleaned once every 6 months - bearing in mind that I live 20 seconds walk away from a primary school, meaning we get the kids coming up my road and making a mess. I'm totally fed up with this country, and I want out ASAP. Down to business: I would like a flat, in a reasonably high populated area (nowhere out in the sticks). One bedroomed flat/apartment with a kitchen/kitchenette is all I want. How much would one of these cost? P.S: If you are thinking of moving to the UK, don't. :) *Max over and out* Bah, I am in such a mood I placed this in the gamers forum *RAGE* rofl. Mods please move, thank you. Your 16, you dont know anything even if you think you do. Please shut up kthnxbye. ps. the US would be a **** place to live, if your gonna move find somewhere decent, oh and dont let the door hit your sorry fat arse on the way out! LordOfLA
Going to another country is a fantastic experiance!! I went to norway for 5 weeks on a contract with opera software, I'd go back in a heartbeat! As it happens though I'm discovering how expensive it is to live in london as I prepare to tell my potential employer how much I need to jst live there.... One thing you need to think about is money when you're in canada/use (I'd say canada, US has RIAA and Bush. The bandwidth isnt enough to outweigh those drawbacks :D )

aldo
Well I know the UK has it's faults and all (I'm personally planning to move to US/Canada but not for a while yet) but tax is not really one of them. You call VAT a problem, well wait until you are actually working and on 40% income tax (inc. all the other stealth taxes) -- but then again have you seen how pricey US healthcare is). Canada will be exactly the same tax wise but the money will be shifted around a bit - they have the same quasi-socialist stance on many things like the UK. Oh btw, you do know that Quebec is France-land, don't you :s? How's your french? I know there is a sizeable minority of English-speakers in Quebec but the govt there is incredibly French-lovin' ;). Is the Canadian immigration policy much the same as it was when I last checked? A point based system on education, income etc etc. I also belive you get some points if you can speak french, but then again I can't really remember. Anyway, good luck with the journey. USA and Canada are nice places :). UK ain't so bad either, tho ;).

Yes, still point based system, but they decreased the needed points. Google found: http://www.workpermit.com/canada/points_calculator.htm
aldo
Yes, still point based system, but they decreased the needed points. Google found: http://www.workpermit.com/canada/points_calculator.htm Wow! They decreased the points? Oh my... they certianly are getting desperate for immigration now. Really, it can't be helped since all the big companies are in the US and there is servere 'brain drain' where all the good students are going to the US from Canada. I read a very intresting and informative article on where Canada went wrong in regards to economic power. Canada at the start of the 1900s should of been way more powerful than the UK by the end of the 1970s (there is a famous quote about this by some Canadian PM). Well, it's all very intesting indeed :). Also, I was looking up taxation in canada and they are virtually equal - 17% in some places. Is it really worth migrating for .5%? (I'm sure you have well fonuded other reasons too)
