anyone else working night shifts?

Recommended Posts

anyone else here have a job during night. I am 19 year old and I am working at a hotel night shift, auditor, full time and I am starting to feel like I am missing out, big time.

I started this job about 7 months ago and it wasn't bad at all untill now, when the school ended and my buddies get to stay out longer and stuff and I have to work.

My shifts are 11-7 and I work sunday untill thursday and have friday and saturday night off. this kinda makes up for everything, having those two night off when everyone goes out and it's actually weekend. what also make me feel better is that I am the only full time person here that actually works 5 days in a row and has 2 days in a row off, ALWAYS.

What I want to know is whether someone else here works night and has a similar schedule. please share your experiences with me and how long you have been working at the job.

I am thinking of applying for a day shift, and although it pays a bit less I want to know whether I would be missing out.

I work nights at a children's hospital. 11pm-730am Sat-Wed. I love it. I'm 24 and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything important. What's important to me is finishing school and my girlfriend, the rest is just "there".

I used to work day shifts until last June. Looking back on it, it was hell. All of the administration is there, people are always ****ed off, and it's more "serious". Nights are different - everyone tries to have fun while still completing their work. My girlfriend works here on nights as well, although we only work 2 days out of the week together.

I guess at 19 I can how you feel the way you do. But, one question to ask yourself is what will pay off in the long run? I originally chose to work nights so I can take all my college courses in the evening (when people who WANT to be there are there). And you mentioned the pay differential. On days I would get $11.50/hr. On nights I pull $13.25/hr. No way would I give that up. I've also trained myself to need only about 4-5 hours of sleep, so I don't miss out on anything my family does during the daytime.

I like my job too, most of the time. sometimes I just get so tired that all I can think about is to go to bed. I usually sleep just right after my work, so from like 7:30 in the morning till about 1 or 2 in the afternoon.

what time do you guys sleep?

also, even though none of my buddies or my gf wake up much earlier than me I still feel like Im missing out on summer fun by having to go do work at 11.

that was more of a response that I wanted, soloredd. I think this will pay off in the long run, as I am a night auditor in a newly opened hotel and I have managers that love me and I was here since the hotel opened. If I gain a lot of experience in the hospitality industry I know that next job I apply could be even higher, management. I took night classes last year and just graduated, having to upgrade two of my classes. I want to take another year off and then maybe go back to school and take evening classes.

At my job though, I work alone, totally alone all night. as far as getting busy, it only does so in the first hour, having to deal with the left over arrivals and that's about it. takes me around an hour or so to run the audit and then there's some minor stuff done in the last hour. so from about 3-6 I am totally free, having to do nothing. One thing I like about this job, I have no bosses to breathe down my neck at all times.

My day contains 36 hours. I guess you could call it a night-shift. :p I take care of my body, and my body takes care of my tasks. I can't complain.

I prefer working nights to be honest. I used to wait tables at a 24hr resteraunt and I just enjoyed the people where were up at that time alot more than the day crowd. Also more stuff is able to fly at night, different kinds of humour and stuff that just wasn't allowed by day dwellers.

Oh and I absolutely hate the sun, so it worked out good for me.

Now I work until midnight generall stay up until the sun comes up and get ready to go to work around 5pm, and I like this as well.

But your job is different than mine, while having no boss there breathing down your neck is a plus, having no real personal interaction for a whole shift does suck. It might be novel the first month or two but I think that would get boring pretty fast. The people I worked with were a blast, and if I worked with them during the day I'm sure I would have enjoyed day shifts more as well, so to me co workers make the job.

But what's really important is what you want and what your priorities are. If this is temporary just to work through school and you feel like you're missing out then by all means tough it out and keep the job, however if you can easily get another job, than that personal interaction with your friends might be well worth switching to another job over. It just all depends.

My sleep hours vary from what is going on that day. My normal sleep hours are about 8am-2pm. But, some days I go to the gym at 12 to play basketball, so I sleep from 8am-11am then 2pm-6pm.

Other benefits of working nights are stuff like going to 11am movie showings so you pay the cheapest price and have the least amount of stupid people there, you can do banking without dealing with long lines, you can go shopping and avoid lines or short supply, you can go on vacation and stay up alot longer than everyone else...

My girlfriend and I just went to Vegas and didn't sleep until about 8 in the morning after having been up since 3pm the day before. Then we woke up at 3pm and started all over. Great times :) Also, you don't have to deal with traffic. I can get from work to home in 10 minutes because all freeway traffic is going opposite of me :) woohooo!!

Well, good luck with your endevours!! :)

I understand your point about the work being really slow. Most nights for me I only do about 2 hours of work in an 8 hour shift. That's just the nature of a children's hospital. In the winter it does get busier, but nothing I'd say strenious. And since my girlfriend works with me, same hours, I can't really begin to understand that part of it. I know it sucks for me when I'm at home at night and she's working. I always call her and bug her because I can't sleep, hahaha.

Good connections, excellent referrals, good work experience is the way to succeed and it seems like you've found it. I don't know how your personality is, but I've never been a person to be out drinking allnight, partying, cruising, whatever. That's why it's easy for me, but it can be hard for alot of other people.

Good luck with your career. I know a few people in the hospitality industry who have done quite well.

well, another gr8 thing I forgot to mention about my job is that it's about a block away from my apartment. I live in the apartments behind the hotel so it takes me about 3 mins to get there. I start getting ready at about 10:35 every day, and that includes preparing my food.

my previous job (sandwich maker at Mr. Sub) was gr8 also but low paid. there I made 7.75/hour with about 32hrs/week and here I make 9.5/hour full time. so after I moved into this job, which was great because usually people need lots of experience to get into hospitality industry whereas I didn't, I saved money on the gas bill and made more money. I am always on a lookout for other jobs in this industry as well but would hate to drive 10 or 15 mins to one. my car isn't that reliable anyway.

are there any decent sleeping pills that I could take for those hot summer days when I just don't feel tired? I know some sleeping pills arent good for you, or were those pills that keep you awake? I am just looking for something that I Could take to help me fall asleep fast.

Are you into Eastern Medicine? For the past few years, I've been working 36hrs a "day," and sleeping 18 hrs a "night." Herbal Medicine was the only thing that worked out for me in both cases.

While you may feel awkward walking into a Chinese Herbalists store, the rewards are great.

Herbal medicine might be all right. I am gonna phone around tomorrow and find more about it. I was thinking about a tea or something like that, not sure if there are pills that I can buy, never asked though.

I don't think I have any sleeping disorders, I'd just like to be able to fall asleep fast after working all night, because the sooner I fall asleep, the sooner I get to get up.

I used to work in managment at fast food. Mostly night shifts; closing. I'd go in at either 4 PM or 7 PM and work until either 2 AM or 4 AM. It depends on if it's a weekend or not. Paid well while I was there and kept me busy. Never a dull moment. Always something to do. I'm a night person and always stay up late so it worked for me at the time.

[Morpheus]I know exactly what you mean[/Morpheus]

I don't have a sleeping disorder either. Several roots that I've tried knocked me out in 5 minutes. I'm not kidding. The guy that sold me the stuff was one of the sports doctors for the Astros. I have a lot of respect for him, and he's a great fella. He's my current supplier of exotic roots.

I chose a less potent root, and I've been using it for quite some time now. I usually get drowsy at the 15 minute mark, and I usually fall asleep at the 20 minute mark. I usually sleep comfortably (despite loud decibels) for many hours on end.
