NY Apartment advice

Recommended Posts

I will be moving to NY city at the end of September because I will be attending the New York Film Academy and I need a place. Does anyone know a good realtor or source for finding a good apartment. I prefer the East Village and my budget is up to about $1000/month. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. Any advice about living in NY City would be helpful too! :D

"East Village" and "up to about $1000/month" can't possibly be togather(unless you consider living in a basement of some chinese food place)

can't help you with any realtors, but i did find http://ny.sublet.com/ :D

the closer you are to downtown or midtown of manhattan, the more expensive it is. not just rent but food and other things too.

I have checked out a few online apartment sites and it seems like I can get a fairly decent studio in the East village for arounnd $1000/month. Where would you suggest? My school is in the East Village so if I could live around there it is best, but I don't mind a bit of a commute. Preferrably I want to live in Manhattan though. Any suggestions for cheaper neighborhoods that I can get to the East Village within 45 min?

ive never lived there myself, but a girlfriend of mine used to live in manhattan. the best thing other than the typical site seeing that youll get to do whenever you want, i recommend going to tasty ds for a late night snack. frozen yogurt and candy!!!!!!!! all hours of the night!!!!!! wheeeeeee

i live near coney island(very buttom of brooklyn). on B express train to downtown manhattan it takes me 30-40min, sometimes even as fast as 20min(that's is pure commute time, add 5-10min walking at both ends).

in brooklyn i know that general living anywhere below midwood section is cheaper than closer to manhattan. can't really tell you about other places since i never lived elsewhere.

you might also want to consider living on NJ side of hudson. tho commute might be more expensive.

 I would definitely share with a roommate -- see if anyone is looking for a roomie.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. Im a bit of a private person and have had a few bad experiences with roommates in past, but that is definately the most reasonable way to go...

$1,000 a month? What websites are you using because I've only seen that price if you're moving in as a roommate. If I could find a place for less than $1000 without a roommate in the city, I would be a happy guy.

Also, I would not be concerned about safety if you're living in one of the better neighborhoods in Manhattan. Like MxxCon also mentioned, prices for everything go up as you get into those areas.

Menupages.com is a very important webpage for any Manhattaner. I suggest you bookmark it now!! :)

look in the area by manhattan beach here in brooklyn, called Sheepshead Bay. I know there were a few complexes put up with studio apartments starting at $300 a month.

I've been thinking about moving out to Brooklyn or Queens but I love Manhattan way too much. Born and raised :)

Yeah but affordability is had is Brooklyn. Queens is ok but there was a report last year where Queens had the worst air quality out of the 5 boroughs.
