hahacar
Hi I heard so many times about FTP, but I dont know how to use it and its purpose. Although I have an account with TRIPOD but creating a FTP server is way beyond my basic skills. Please someone if possible describe it in very simple way step by step so that I can set it for myself too.
+BudMan MVC Posted June 29, 2004 MVC Share Posted June 29, 2004 If you do not even know what its for - why would you think you want to use it? FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" - do you have some files you need to xfer? To access a ftp server, and download or upload files - all you need is a client. Most browser can download from ftp servers, some even can upload. But your best bet is to grab a client. Ws_ftp from ipswitch, cuteftp, smartftp, etc.. etc.. Menel
Guildftpd is a decently good and FREE server www.guildftpd.com. Though I prefer www.bpftpserver.com which is built off of the old gene6 daemon v2.x series, its not free though, something like $15-30. I wrote a quick guide for Guild for the newbs at my school so they could get indexed on the search engine. http://mastap.mine.nu/ftpsearch/ftphowto/guild-1.htm There is a new Gene6 3.x but I didn't really like it much. SmartFTP is the best FTP client I've used out of CuteFTP, WS_FTP, Voyager, Bulletproof. and its also FREE www.smartftp.com
forster
It sounds like he wanted to make a ftp server on his Tripod account, but from the poor grammar of the first post I really couldnt be sure. He's right tho, he's a proper newbie. Basically, if you dont think you need one, and you dont know what it does Ayub, Id stick to http upload and not worry about ftp, its obviously too advanced for you. I saw this page of tripod and I wanted to know what exactly it is? If I want to keep files on net I can use YAHOO BRIEFCASE or my own mail box which is now 100 MB Secondly if I want to put those files for people I will use BLOGS. Then what is the use of FTP? In tripod its showing 50MB space for my files. Similarly yahoo also giving 50MB in geocities (file manager). Its hammering me Need help seriously link for the tripod site is http://www.tripod.lycos.co.uk/build/webftp/

one321
I would say create the entire website on your computer then when it is how you want it use leapftp or whatever FTP client to upload it or any other files you want out there. As far as FTP serving...I don't think you really need to do that. I found that Serv-U 5.0 is a good program. It took me through the steps when I was a n00b with it. I got some help here on how to forward ports past my router's firewall and the rest is history.
