Singaporean woman thumbs 26 words in 43.24 seconds

SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old Singaporean woman appears to have set a world record for sending text messages over a mobile phone, underlining Asia?s growing obsession with mobile phone technology.b>Kimberly Yeo thumbed 26 words in 43.24 seconds into her phone, beating a world record of 67 seconds for the same words set by a Briton last September, said Singapore?s dominant telephone carrier, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd, on Monday.

Mobile phones are an ubiquitous accessory in technology-savvy Singapore where more than four out of five people own a handset, giving the wealthy city-state one of the world?s highest mobile phone penetration rates.

At a contest in front of a department store on Sunday, Yeo was among 125 people timed by SingTel and a panel of independent officials to see how fast they could type the following 160-character message:

?The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.?

The message -- typed in lower and upper case -- is a Guinness World Records? standard in the relatively new category of mobile phone text messaging.

SingTel said Yeo, a business student, narrowly beat an 18-year-old Singaporean?s time of 43.66 seconds on Sunday but shattered the current record in the Guinness World Records of 67 seconds set by a Briton in September 2003 in Sydney, Australia.

SingTel said it would submit Yeo?s time to Guinness.

?Predictive text? functions which finish the spelling the words typed into a phone and other spelling aids were barred from the contest, SingTel said.

Yeo, who won a S$17,500 ($10,250) in cash for her nimble thumbs, said she sends out about an average of 1,500 text messages a month to friends and family.ends and family.

And thus proves how stupid people are. 43 seconds to do that? She could have called the person, and said 4x as much to them in that time. Cell phones are for calling people!!!

I guess you are not living in Asia. It costs a BOMB to make a phone call. Singapore is worse, the receiver will get charged for incoming calls... if you are under a certain cellular plan that is.

SMS is relatively much much much cheaper.

BOOG one word, 3G. The best thing there is, better then a PC. Well, it's almost a pc, mobile videocalls, tv in a cell phone, and anything u

can imagine... That's the life :D

well obviously the paradigm of what cell phone does and what it should do is changing BOOG. don't get left in the dust and stuck in a rut.

True. But...

I have a digital camera...I don't need a phone that takes crappy fuzzy pictures

I have a PC and XBox and gameboy. I don't a need a phone to play games on a 2.5 inch by 1.75 inch screen.

I need something that I can call, and receive calls. Sorry...derailing this thread....continue on with the text queen.

i hear you man and i understand your point but i think these kinds of devices are built with multi-functionality and on-the-go-use in mind.

you can't lug your pc everywhere. the xbox isn't mobile (yes, the gba is... but it's not a phone). if you're just out and about and not really looking to be taking pictures or doing any heavy gaming... would you rather carry a phone, a camera, and a gba or would you just rather bring your ultra-slim 3g cell phone and not worry about all that guff?

p.s. i don't own a cell phone or a gba and my digital camera is five years old. i'm out of date, i know.

I agree with BOOGS, a phone is a phone and shud be for that only. No wonder why cellphones run out of batteries so quick, cos the screen is always lit when txt'n, your looking in live view for picture taking, and playing games when your bored. Bah. (Hugs PC, Digital Camera, and Cellphone all together) lol :)

On the Nokia 6800 I can type that much too in the same amount of time :p

It doesn't count if she is using that phone!
