Large
I was reading this article over at Microsoft and I found a part of it very funny but very true ! There are 35 million people in the UK with Internet access but 34 million of them don?t know a firewall from a chocolate biscuit. Link : My Friends are a Security Risk ! This article is a very good resource if your new to computing.

[jon]
see? its at this point where microsoft should wake up and realise half the people dont know what a megabyte is... someone i was speaking to realised it was "some sort of storage thing" and thats it. what id like to see is good defaults- firewall is ON by default, for example. a virus scanner to be included with windows maybe too? again, also ON... some people think windows xp already has a virus scanner.... some people think that having cool searchbars on internet explorer is really useful and the popups and pr0n are just coming from somewhere else... Hence Microsoft XP SP2 !! Why should it be Microsofts job anyway? They aint doing the hacking etc.!

ConfusedFusion
i had installed SPF on my dad's laptop to beef up security, with good intentions off course. The next day I got a call at 2am in the morning from my dad, asking what he should do about a dialog box which says "Msn messenger trying to connect to server....." with the following options: Yes/ No/ Drive Son Nuts at 2am in the morning? Guess which one he chose! The lesson: dont stick a fireall up someone else's computer.
adam.sproul
I had to go round and fix a neighbours computer the other day and first of all I ran Spybot and also Ad-Aware, overall there were 400 pieces of spyware and adware !!!! I told the neighbour to run it once every month, or more frequently and they said 'OK'. I go back a few months later to see how the system is doing and they have more spyware on there. So in the end I decided to give up on them, I set-up Spybot and Ad-Aware to run automatically , but they kept cancelling it. So I just left feeling very sorry for the poor PC. Thats exactly the same problems I come across so your not the only one. They ask for your help, so you tell them they must defrag, run adaware, etc but do they do it, NO ! Then they come moaning to me saying my computer is going slow and I say well have you been doing what I've told you to do and they say NO. Computers are like cars, if you don't put oil, water and petrol ( Gas ) in them they will stop, if you don't do maintenance on your PC then it will also stop. Microsoft do have some responsibility to protect the end user but end user should also use some savvy and listen to us guys when we tell them do something. Would you not agree ? Chad.C
If a friends asks me to fix their computer i'm like please no..because i'll put all this work into it, get attached to my piece of artwork and then see them treating it like crap.. I hate un-organised computers. Computers without Anti-virus and firewalls gives me shivers down my neck...

Large
everyone i know has dsl by now and got infected with sasser, viruses etc. sheesh, installing a software firewall can't be that hard can it? Um No, to be honest some people just can't be bothered, if people just made an effort to learn the basics then they really would benefit. I mean if you own a personal computer and you want to use it, if you learn the basics, ie: Antivirus, firewall and Windows Update, etc then it would save them money in the end, they would not have to pay to get it repaired. I bet your life that a shop would charge 2 hours labour just to fix a 10 minute problem that user could fix themselves at the end of the day, if only they learn't the basics ! Thats happened to me many a time when maintaining friends PC's. The only way around the problem was to start charging them a fee to do it, because once they start paying for it to be fixed they do actually try themselves. But to be honest I'm glad some of you feel this way, I thought I was the only one, its true you build a friend a PC, install the software really neatly and when you revisit them a month later, its like ahhhhhhhhhhh, what have done to my lovely installation, LOL !
adam.sproul
I hate people that say 'I can't be bothered', as previously mentioned if people were willing to learn the basics they would save themselves much hassle and save money in the long run. I think that in the end there should be a test for being able to use a PC, kind of like an ECDL but it would be compulsary.

Now I really did think I was the only one that thought that, there should be a test to prove your competent to own a PC, nothing too difficult just an understanding of security, Firewalls, Antivirus and General maintenance of a PC. Something along these lines would cut down on the viruses and bugs spreading around, it would also make a non competent PC user more relaxed and in the know with his / her own machine.
