DerkPY
Anybody had this done? I would consider it in later life, like after uni. Does it hurt? What do they actually do etc?

Monkeh
http://www.lasikmd.com/ This site provides some good info, but some of it may be sugarcoated to promote sales. Still, lots of good info :).
Max Veteran Posted June 30, 2004 Veteran Share Posted June 30, 2004 My ICT teacher had it done. He couldn't see a foot in front of him without glasses.......now his vision is 100% crisp. (Damn, now I can't flick stuff round the class without him seeing)
aadhu
i heard it's pretty painful the first couple of weeks
spiffy0517
essentially they take the lazer and "burn" bits of the cornea to allow your eye to focus light correctly so it corrects your vision.
DerkPY
^yer, a friends mam had it done. And she was bandaged and stuff, but there are different techniques now. I was just interested in them.
plasticparadox
It's a wise move to wait until you're finished uni, because as time progresses the procedure becomes safer, more effective and cheaper. Remember, you can only get this done once, so make sure you choose a reputable provider/physician.

DerkPY
The main one in the UK is Ultra Lase. They offer: - LASEK - A development from the earliest laser eye treatment. Now usually only offered to those with mild to moderate prescriptions. Features rapid, multi-dimensional eye-tracking. ?995 per eye. - LASIK - A more advanced technique, introduced in the mid-1990s. Now the most popular laser eye treatment worldwide. Features rapid, multi-dimensional eye-tracking. ?995 per eye. ULTRALASIK/ULTRALASEK - Features tissue-sparing technology and rapid, multi-dimensional eye-tracking. ?1,195 per eye. - ULTRALASIKplus/ULTRALASEKplus - Features personalised wavefront-guided treatment, iris recognition, tissue-sparing technology and rapid, multi-dimensional eye-tracking. ?1,295 per eye. - ULTRA-RF - A non-laser treatment for presbyopia (the age-related condition where reading glasses are needed). ?1,295 per eye. But that is REALLY expensive! I thought there was one where you went in for a series of treatments over a period of time? I would rather get it down all at once though. You've got to be 21 as well. I'm 18 at the moment, so thats 3 years of development + I'll have to wait until after Uni and I get a job to afford that!
Tomi
I'm going to do it soon. Sometime after summer vacation. :geek:

If it lasts for the rest of your life ( My teachers wasn't... she had it done and then her vision was going bad again?) its worth it besides. That's like around $3000 its not that bad :D, I have contacts now, and I'm not near the age requirement of 21. Maybe I'll get my parents to help me pay for it if I really want it that bad, but by the time I'm 21 it will be ALOT cheaper :D. - ULTRALASIKplus/ULTRALASEKplus - Features personalised wavefront-guided treatment, iris recognition, tissue-sparing technology and rapid, multi-dimensional eye-tracking. ?1,295 per eye. Seems like the best choice
Guest Ryan
I've been interested in it. I haven't done much research on it though. I've heard it is very expesnive and doesn't always work most of the time. But I'm not exactly sure on the details about all of it.
Draaku
I had it done. The best thing I could have ever done for myself. I am very active, surfing, snowboarding, basketball. Plus I have three boys who are all very active. Glasses were always getting knocked off my face, plus contacts did not work for my eyes because of an astigmatism. I had mine done at the Laser Eye Center in Thousand Oaks, Calif. It was a little scetchy at first, you have stay very very still, and this little suction cup thing sucks your eye ball out a little, laser does its work...The suction was the most painful part, and it wasnt even that painful, more like uncomfortable. Then they bandage the eyes, some dark shades and its home. I rested for about 4 hours, took banadages off, 20/20 or better vision!! I had it done about 3 years ago, my vision is still 20/20. the only side effect is that my eyes will get a little dry every 6 months or so...couple of drops and all is well. I highly recommend it. Bearded Kirklander
I read somewhere that it works with dark colored eyes best and if you have light blue or other light eyes, it is not recommended. That may have changed over the years with advances in technology though.
Guest Ryan
I read somewhere that it works with dark colored eyes best. Hmm, maybe once they perfect it more and if it ever becomes cheaper than I shall give it a try. :)
SonComet
I have been trying to decide between getting this done and a car. I'm only 20 but my eyes have stabalized for 4-5 years now. If they haven't changed again this year my doctor says I can get it done this summer. I think that if he says yes I will do it. I HATE wearing contacts. My eye doctor is supposed to be really good at it, but its gonna be almost $3000 per eye I think. Owell.

Remember, you can only get this done once, so make sure you choose a reputable provider/physician. IIRC, you can have it done more than once. I was watching a Lasik infomercial few months or so ago, and the premiere surgeon in Arizona (forget his name) mentioned you can have it done again for readjustments or if you dont hit 20/20 the first time. You just have to wait a bit. it's cheap here too, $800/eye.

hunterv69
i had it done 2 months ago and I love it. The operation itself take about 30 seconds per eye and COMPLETELY painless. The worse part of the whole thing was putting drops in my eyes, I'm a chicken to anything that comes close to my eyes. You don't feel a thing when the lazer corrects your eyes becuase they are numb from an eye drop the doctor gives you. You will have to be VERY carefully the first week not to have anything touching your eyes becuase it might move a piece of the eye that the doctor cut to do the lazer. You will see perfect vision once you leave the office. my operation cost about 1,500 and worth every penny. I hope this helps... if oyu need any other questions answered, pm me.
