Cheapest way to get to New York from LA

Recommended Posts

As an unemployed student my budget is limited as hell. But I need to get to NYC on July 30-Aug5. 1 and depart Aug 12-Aug 17th. The dates are flexible as hell and can be moved around.

edit: this is to see my girlfriend before I go to college...

Greyhound is definetly cheap, as username suggested. However, it will turn even the shortest trip into a long one. My brother once road from Clearwater to Tallahassee (a 4 hour drive) and he said they stopped so much it took 8 hours. I can only imagine going cross country

well the cheapest way is to walk

technically walking would be more i think?

it would take a while, and you would have to feed yourself along the way :woot:

greyhound is what i would take :)

Walking is Definitely not the Cheapest. Unless he hitched a ton of rides, which is illegal in various of the intermediate states. He would spend a lot of money feeding his appetite breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks...

Greyhound maybe cheaper than airline, but airline would be very competitive, you should check those online airline tix dealers, expedia, etc... Because air is far more comfy than a bus.

My suggestion, is estimate the distance in miles, evaluate that with how much it'd cost you to fill up your car by checking its' average mpg. Check the bus prices, include some spending money, as they take rest stops between meals, and then check airline tix, you'll probably need a connection flight, but expedia and other online tix dealers usually can give you a good price if the trip isn't immediate (couple weeks in advance gives you better price).

Go to their forums and post your question, you will get a lot of replies.

Continental operates a non-stop service from New York (Newark) to LAX. It shouldn't be too expensive as the plane itself originates from their hub.

I am not to sure on the American Airlines/Delta situation at JFK, although I would surmise that it would be more expensive as Delta would probably route you through Atlanta.

grey hound is cheap but it's hell.

It's so horrible.

No air conditioning, smells like a toilet, and not even a little thing to pull down over the window to keep the sun out of your face.

I would also check to see if it's cheaper for her to come to you instead.

i took a trip on greyhound a year or so ago to oklahoma and it wasn't that bad... if you want to spend 3 days (which would have been 12 hours if i drove) on a sometimes crowded bus... was okay except for the guy who was putting deodorant on the entire trip... and i mean all over his body... *shudders*

Walk! If you have seen "Day after tomorrow" then following their timescales it'd take about 5 hours! LOL

I really have no grasp of how large America is.

Bus, but i would think there are low fairs for plane tickets since its such a common destination.

BTW, you better get some goodbye sex cause this relationship aint lasting.

Solution: let her go with grey hound

in my opinion, time is money and it would take at least around 2 days (non-stop driving mind you) to drive from New Jersey(east coast) to California(west coast) and then another 2 days back, again non-stop driving...I would spend the $200-$250 to fly from say LAX to Newark, NJ (then take the path/bus/train/cab to NYC).

edit: btw...thats for a round trip flight! (oops! lol)
