Hotmail Ups the Ante

Recommended Posts

All I can say is thank you google. Once in a while, a good company comes and makes a move that is just inspiring - Gmail.

Then other companies jump up like they've been kicked in the nuts :o and do what they should have done all along - Yahoo and Google. Here is a direct quote from a message in my mailbox.

Dear MSN? Hotmail? Member:

As a valued MSN Hotmail Member, we want you to know that there are some exciting changes coming soon to your account that will help you do more, receive more and store more than ever before. And it's FREE.

i am as well on 2mb still (i think it says it'll change in the autumn), but i am in the process of moving to gmail and find the cleanness of the interface refreshing (too much rubbish on the hotmail interface).

I heard 100mb first, now 250mb. Are you sure there wasn't any fine print saying "Actual storage space: promised space/100 = actual space. Why? Because we're Microsoft."

I'm still at 2 meg. But, I use Outlook Express 6 to access my hotmail, so there is no login or interface to mess with. It is so totally slick to check your hotmail through OE 6. It creates a dedicated, collapsable account group with 4 folders (Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, Bulk Mail) and I have it set to check the mail like every 3 or 5 minutes and it auto-downloads all the new stuff and I can reply right through Outlook too. Makes it seemless. I love it. (Y)

never really touched my gmail, so don't think Plus's 2gb will effect me much. 've been dumping my emails to my hdd with outlook.

that is a clever system, and convenient, but i've heard so many horror stories about viruses and it seems they're updating OE as often as IE (i use neither, preferring firefox/thunderbird for safety's sake). still, i agree that the hotmail/OE system is cool! :)

I guess I have been lucky. I followed Microsoft's advice and set Outlook Express 6 to the RESTRICTED ZONE meaning no scripting runs in the mail. I also set it to display email in PLAIN TEXT only, another thing I read on their site. Plus, I have Norton Anti-Virus 2002 running and it scans all incoming and outgoing email for viruses. Plus, I have Hotmail accounts set to ENHANCED junk email protection.

By doing those things above, I have been able to avoid being infected with viruses. Before I set the Hotmail Junk Filter to Enhanced, Norton flagged viruses a few times and I was able to delete every one of those emails without trouble using the Norton interface that came up when it detected the virus. But since I set it to Enhanced, I don't think I've gotten a single email with a virus.

I really like how well Norton AV works with Outlook Express 6. (Y)

But I also think using Thunderbird/Mozilla is a very cool thing and I would not begrudge anyone their use. I just happen to like OE 6 because of the Hotmail integration but I do try to take every reasonable precaution to protect myself. :)

:( i dont have the 250 yet :(. not even an email saying that its going to change :/.

I remember people saying that when you logon to your hotmail thing on the web and choose the TODAY listing, on the lower left corner it will tell you that the upgrades are coming, including the 250 meg of email. May be worth a try.
