200-300Kb/s on 768???? And I get around 128Kb/s on 1Mbit?

It is impossible to get 200-300KBytes ot 768Kbits...

The maximum is 96 +/- 5 (Devide 768Kbs by 8, and you get the KBs).

Ever since I've gotten cable, I refuse to use dial-up for more than about 5 minutes. It literally annoys me at how slow everything goes. Though I haven't used it since they came out with the "5x faster" speeds though... Still, I'd rather have raw speed than use compression :p

I lived on 56k (if you can call it "lived") for years, I was reluctant to go with DSL because my cable company promised Cable Internet for a year plus. I switced to the DSL about 8 months ago, MAN am I happy with it... 350+ downloads... VERY sweet...

Damn, lucky you people. I am still on 56k. The stupid phone company haven't got the guts to allow our local exchange to support ADSL, only satielle but that is hell expensive. But it is ok. Speed is ok. It takes me about 2 minutes to download up to 1 MB file. I can live with it until I decide to move to the neighbour city which has ADSL support.

those years are over for me... ADSL here... but really... I admire people who had the nerve to put up with the speeds and handshaking time on 56k (myself included!)...

There will be a time when we all sit back and laugh at todays high speed. will we ever be happy lol :D

 I remember having 56k and downloading large files.. Its a real pain, so I know where you are coming from Music Master. I think I use to average about 120 megs per 6 hours on 56k, so it wasn't too bad. But when I decided to go on a little downloading spree of futurama episodes is finally when my parents said ok to getting cable internet because it ****ed them off so much having the phone line always tied up! :ninja: :D

It'd be quicker to locate the nearest Neowin member to where you're at now, have them download it, then drive over and pick it up on CD-R.

I used to be on 33.6kb/s. To download a 15Mb file it would take me 40mins.

Then i switched to ADSL, but that was slow as (for around $90US). Max i could get was 25kb/s!!!

So now i am with OptusNet Cable. For around $50US i am getting average speed of 500kb/s, but max is about 2Mb.

But for those of you who think your connections are fast...:

The new record, announced last Tuesday at the Spring 2004 Internet2 member meeting in Arlington, Va., was for transmitting data over nearly 11,000 kilometers at an average speed of 6.25 gigabits per second. This is nearly 10,000 times faster than a typical home broadband connection. The network link used to set the record reaches from Los Angeles to Geneva, Switzerland.[/b]

But this is me:
