incubusdaemon
utility: arabic, spanish, hindi, japanese or mandarin. English is the most useful globally, thanks to america being powerful but dreadfully monolinguistic, but you already speak it. beauty: portuguese, french, one of the more esoteric african languages (imo) fun: russian (cyrillic), japanese (kanji), arabic, any language with an alternative alphabet/ideographic writing system ease: spanish/french/italian/dutch/danish difficulty: latin, arabic, cantonese I know french and english. If I were to pick a third it'd be mandarin since so many people here in Cali speak it. After that it'd be arabic so I could watch al-jazeera and other TV stations from over there to see how they see us. After that it'd be spanish to learn all of the major languages spoken in the western hemisphere (sorry brazil).

lefuzzbox
i think you should have a definite purpose in mind before choosing a lanugage to learn.as for me i would probably pick spanish as my next one,cuz so many countries in south america speak that, and ive been dreaming about goin there for so long. Mandarin is not a bad choice i must say, think about it,nearly 1/4 ppl on this planet speak the language,in the mean while like what someone said China would become another world economic center someday.
:oIf you are using that argument, then he should learn portuguese! // French would only be useful for italian learning I don't think French is only useful to learn Italian. I am learning Spanish right now and am having a much easier time due to the similarities in vernacular between French and Spanish.

QuantumTrickery
Latin. Hands down. Once I had a firm grasp on the language I was able to learn French, spanish, italian, among others I am learning rather quickly.
Richard Davison
I would suggest Italian, or French, maybe. I believe Italian is easier because it doesn't have those evil pronounciations, and is more similar to Spanish. German, is just plain confusing. I'm also in your situation, but I chose Russian because I want a challenge. Putting aside English/Spanish, I chose Russian. I'm learning Italian next.
