A little math help?

Recommended Posts

I'm taking a course online right now, and I'm stuck on a problem.

x^2 + 2x + 1 = 3x + 3

I haven't had Algebra in awhile, so I'm not sure what to do with this to factor it. The site doesn't really cover the algebraic manipulation of the proble, just the Trigonometry part. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Uhh... Drunk and dun remember anything from highschooll....

x^2 + 2x + 1 = 3x + 3

-2x +2x

x^2 + 1 = 5x + 3

- 1 +1

x^2= 5X + 4

umm... no friggin clue what to do now... sad? not really, you never use this **** in real life. Tell your teacher she's wasting her time teaching meaningless subjects and that you want something you'll use after HS... She'll tell you how it is usefull then call her a lying bitch.. BECUASE SHE IS!

subtract the 3x + 3 to the other side, giving

x^2 - x - 2 = 0

then come up with two numbers that add up to -1 (middle coefficient) and multiply together to get -2 (last one)

and those numbers are: +1 and -2,

so then put those in factor form :

(x + 1)(x - 2)

so the solution is x = -1 and x = +2

(Y) this is high school stuff rite? :D

First set it equal to zero.

Complete the square.

If you never ever see a factor and get stuck

use this formula

x = ( - b +- sqrt( b^2-4ac ) ) / ( 2a )
