changing your name

Recommended Posts

i am 14 and i want to change my last name (for a good reason). however i have no idea what the rules, regulations, and everything else is about this. yes i googled it. i did not get any clear answers about changing your name if youre a minor. i believe there are fees involved in doing this, but does anyone have a ballpark figure of what they could be? thanks for your help :).

p.s. i did do a neowin search and i didnt find anything

Needs to be done in court... march to the local courthouse and they will get you headed in the right direction.

for a small fee, you put in a letter to the state, or go down yourself. In Washington, it's not that big a process, there's even one person where that's all her job is, is to grant Name Changes LOL Good luck :)

That's what you need to do, don't knw there but here is a very complicated/expensive process.

I know becuase I was doing some researching too becuase I want to change my name from Ivan to Ivand and change my last name to my mum's one. but i need to be 18+ to do it here :(

pretty sure you will need to be 18, also this is a big deal, not like oyu go change your name and your done, have to get all ID's redone witch will cost money, school records, personal recoreds, medical records will all have to be changed....anything that has your name on it will need to be altered usually at your expen$e

heh just tried googling it - only pieces of useful infomation were that sites sell kits for about $40 and....

REMEMBER: When the change of a name is for a minor, the application for a name change must be brought by one or both of the minor?s parents, but if the minor has two living parents and one does not join in the application, that non-petitioner parent must be served with reasonable notice of the application and, if that parent objects, a hearing will be held to determine whether the change of name is in the best interest of the minor. If you anticipate that the non-petitioner parent will object and/or if the non-petitioner parent does object a registered attorney in your area should be consulted.

Im not quite sure how it works in new jersey, considering im from Sydney, Australia.

But i've just recently turned 18, and want to get my middle name removed for personal reasons, and because i am 18 i just have to send in a printed page from the Department of Births, Deaths, and Marriages website, with my details filled in, and signed by some sort of superior, eg, Judge, Justice of Peace, etc..

However i did want to get this done before i was 18, but you needed to take the matter to court, and have both parents (if applicable) permission, but i couldnt get this done because of my dad.

So if your parents are willing, just take it to court, otherwise just wait a few years, you never know, you may decide to leave it (i dont know your reason for changing of course).

Kthx :D

you have to be 18, or emacipated to do it. I changed my name when i was 15, and all I needed were parents signatures, a witness, and an appearance before a judge.
