Monkeh
I think motels are found by major roads and act as a place to stay for tired drivers...? Afaik, a hotel is more expensive than a motel.

A1Capone
Hotel vs. Motel We have all stayed them, but what is truly the difference, the answer will shock you. What is the difference between a hotel and a motel? There really is none. The term ?motel? is derived from the term "motor hotel," which originally meant that the hotel provided parking (circa 1950s). The term motel today generally is used for a "limited service" property (i.e., a hotel that provides a limited number of amenities and does not provide food service. Thank you web. The employees at an un-named hotel did not know, so we had to go surfing. I was taught that the difference between a hotel and motel was simply that a guest can enter the room of a motel from the parking lot whereas a guest of a hotel must enter the room from an indoor corridor. I haven't done any personal research, but I have noticed most properties along the interstate with exterior room entrances refer to themselves as motels. Just thought I would pass that on. I enjoy your web-site.
Fred Derf Veteran Posted July 5, 2004 Veteran Share Posted July 5, 2004 What's the difference between a 'Hotel' and a 'Motel'? and are Motels generally cheaper? About $100/night. ;) Hilton, Sheraton, Westin, Four Seasons, Marriott, Sutton Place, Hyatt, Delta are hotels Best Western, Days Inn, Holiday Inn, Super 8 are motels. Hotels can cost up to $400/night for a five star hotel. Motels are considerably cheaper.
Ryne
Thats the way I look at it too Stain. Motels are usually one floor in my area, hotels shoot through the air, 3 to 20 floors high. They tend to be more expensive as well. I always prefer a hotel over a motel.
mooodi
motel..smaller rooms..local bathroom for every corridor..etc.. u can rent by the hr in a motel..where as in a hotel u have to check in and check out @ certain times.. etc..
iSheep
In Brazil and other countries in South America, motels are part of their culture. They are charged by the hour, and you can use them during the day as well. Teenagers go there when they are fed up with their parents. Blokes can pick up women and take them there. Many of them offer a large range of 'exciting' objects that can provide lots of fun in that situation. They really hate it when you confuse a hotel with a motel. Generally motel is accepted as being quickly avalible to cars, for example, where you park just outside your room or pretty close to it. A hotel, you may park in a car park, or further away from the hotel and then stay there.

I would not consider anything rented by the hour or anything with communal bathrooms to be a motel. That's a dive. Best Western, Days Inn, Holiday Inn and Super 8 do not operate in that manor. I'm sure their parking is cheaper than a downtown hotel.

Fred Derf Veteran Posted July 5, 2004 Veteran Share Posted July 5, 2004 holiday inn is not a motel. nor is days inn and best western. Do they offer room service, mini-bars and conference rooms? They're motels. Okay the Holiday Inn on King is decent but other Holiday Inns are lower quality. For example there is a Holiday Inn in Barrie, ON. http://www.hiok.com/ourhotel/ourhotel.htm Okay the Holiday Inn in Barrie isn't that bad either. For Barrie, that is. http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/yrrca I've stayed at a Best Western before and Days Inn is about the same. linsook
yes they have room service... conferences rooms? not all sheratons have conference rooms either... but its still a hotel and so are the others. and yes some do offer conerence rooms. all you have to do is google em up... they state on the site themselves that they are hotels. just googled days inn, best western and holiday inn and they do have conerence rooms but not all... but to be honest, i never stayed in a motel... i've done the holiday inn in montreal.. the sheraton on hwy 7, the comfort suites downtown, howard johnson hwy 7 aswell (closes one to a motel cause it was small). but im sure the 3 you named as motels are infact hotels... i have yet to try best western and days inn... but they say they are hotels on their site's about us.
