What OS should i install??

Recommended Posts

Just remember that XP takes at least 1.5 GB to install.

If you have over 256MB of Memory and a decent PIII 733+ then I'd go with the Mandrake + XP option.

yeah well im downloading 8.2 rite now, i just hope it will be better than 8.0 cuz i remember using it when i had my old Voodoo 3 and it was HELL, i mean it was sooo slow (KDE was much slower than Gnome but even gnome was slow)

I'm afraid I never understood the need for a dual boot desktop machine (save for learning purposes) because the 2nd one rarely has the feature set/ease of use as the primary so why bother?

Depending on your sys specs go for XP if you have the processor/memory.

Dashel,

I have the following OS' on my laptop:

Windows 3.11 For Workgroups for fun :)

MS-DOS 6.0 Came with Windows 3.11

Windows nt 4.0 MSCE demo version

Mandrake 8.1

Windows 2000 Proffesional

Windows 98

I also have XP.

The main reason I have them installed is because I need to test my apps in different operating system. Win32s for Windows 3.11 does not work though :ermm:

And you though dual booting was bad :D

Btw, go with option 1

Not bad, just pointless unless (as you mentioned) you are

a) learning linux

b) compatibility/testing purposes

Still think most people do it for penis envy...

this is my suggestion...

u have practically 15000 MB you are dealing with here (not exact but this works):

1. Use 2500 for Mandrake (This includes swap).

2. Use 2500 for WINXP & bulk of your apps. (NTFS)

3. Use 10000 for MP3s, file storage, and apps. (FAT32)

The reason why #3 is FAT32 is so that you can also mount the drive and use it for a file bin in linux. This way you can share the mp3s and the like. Also putting WinXP on a small partition packed tightly will not allow the drive to become as defragmented so you won't have to defrag as often and it will be faster.

I do similar but on wider scale...Here's me...

1. Redhat 7.2 (7500) INCLUDING SWAP

2. WINXP (7500) NTFS

3. File bin FAT32 (25000)
