neowin funding

Recommended Posts

Ok, starting from the beginning:

A long time ago, in a country far far away, Neobond and Redmak got this great idea for a new site. The would call it Neowin (for the new version of Windows coming out at the time: Windows XP) and it was good.

So starting with shared hosting, then moving up to dedicated servers, the site grew. They went through many a host, until ultimately severing all ties with any host and purchasing a dedicated server at ThePlanet's datacenter. The site was upgraded to a slighly more powerful server, the P2800SR is what they have now, I believe. It's topped out with 4GB of RAM (Redmak didn't like the number 3GB, so it was upgraded to the max :p ). In addition, there is a P4 server called data.neowin.net which hosts our ads, neowinmail, and some other things. Future plans would be to split out MySQL work and Apache work into two separate servers, and to add more Apache and MySQL replication servers as the site grows.

Revenue for the site comes from ads and subscribers/donaters. Banner ads, skyscrapers, news item ads, the colored orange links (vibrant media), etc. I think I'm the only person that's purchased banner ads on the site, but you can do so too (You'll have to contact Redmak for the CPM amounts, but it's not that bad). The site does get 6.2M hits/day (currently 6168059 per day this month). Of course, that's everything transferred from the server, including images. The actual pages per day is about 500K pages/day (547405 currently this month). Last month, according to the web stats at least, 765926273 KBytes were transferred (766GB). However, it's a lot more than that. The server has a 2000GB transfer quota, so there is plenty of room there, I'm sure.

Simply Put....

Neowin has become a MISSION CRITICAL portal. :)

Is there any way to send a donation and/or purchase a subscription without having to use Paypal? I'm in the U.S. and would like to be able to contribute, but would prefer to mail in a check or money order or somehow contribute where I do not have to have a Paypal account. Is that possible at all?

Please PM me if it is not appropriate to answer in this thread. Thank you. :)

I did a search for this already and I didn't find anything....but just out of curiosity..how does neowin pay for bandwidth and everything? There aren't exactly gigantic ads everywhere and no one is REQUIRED to pay..so..yeah..anyone?

keldyn blackmails me...he says all the money goes to neowin :D

maybe someone should create an extension for firefox that basically opens up certain ads on neowin's main page that counts as a click :D :D

Heck, I don't even like Firefox yet and I think that's a great idea.

Also, I've always wondered this: Do you have to let an ad page load entirely before you close it in order to get paid?
