Why Neowin has load issues

Recommended Posts

Hey I just worked out why Neowin is always having load issues, it was said before that it was because of the backup script, that probably contributed to the problem but not enough to push the server that little bit too far.

The reason is that quite a lot of Neowinians have changed their browsers to Firefox or Opera, and this presents two problems for the server:

(1) Throttling/Pipelining makes 4 requests to the server at a time instead of 1.

(2) Tabs make us load more pages than we would without.

IE isn't a very good browser in a lot of our opinions (Including mine) but it must be saving load on the server.

Think about it, 1 Firefox/Opera user would be the same as 4 Internet Explorer users hitting the server, just with the Throttling/Pipelining

If you are going to solve this once and for all, this would need to be taken into consideration

Humm, not really sure what a solution would be aside from banning Firefox server side, and THAT WON'T HAPPEN, and even then you could use the User Agent Switcher extention to trick the site.

Good ideas, now find a way to fix it ;)

Well I think there is an apache extension/configuration to prevent throttling, like when you're using a download manager like DAP and the file can't be split.

As for tabs, implement something so that if the same cookie requests a page on Neowin more than 2 times a second, it delays the processing of the second request onwards intentionally until there is enough load availible.

We're not going to restrict anyone. We'll deal with the load issues as always (it's an ongoing battle :p)

I've made some changes today that will improve things a bit.
