In terms of easy, I'd stick with vb. C/C++/Java are pretty easy languages to learn and very usefull. Just about all the games created today are coded in C and/or C++, so if you wanna get into games programming, that's the way to go. It seems C# is gaining a lot of ground today and so it would be useful to pick up. At the place I work, COBOL is used exclusively on the mainframes and in the realm of mathematics, FORTRAN is still king. Any language (programming) is easy to pick up, you just gotta find out which one you want/need.

Best language is java, C/C++, asm (various), matlab, maple, mathematica, perl, python, php, tcl/tk,......

Now lets go on to our debate of the best tool.... I believe its the

hammer, screwdriver, wrench, ....

well it all depends wat u want to do... it s realy not important that u know a single language as to whether u know how to program properly or not.

anyway i think one should definately know c\c++. if u can code in c\c++, u can code in anything.

There is no one size fits all programming language...some languages are more suited to certain things than others. From a learning based perspective I would recommend learning C++ or Java. You will end up hating programming if you stick yourself in at the deepend...start off on the easy stuff and work your way to complex programs. Good luck!
