Do you guys leave your computer on or off at night? I am running my computer 24/7 and I only reboot when it get slow down. I don't know if that is the best for my computer or not. What do you guys usually do? Power down when unused?

Havent restarted my other desktop for over 45 days so far running Windows 2000 Proffesional. Would not reccomend keeping a laptop on that long :D

I turn mine off for a few reasons

1) I live in the state of California and it's become second nature to turn off unused appliances/lights/etc to conserve energy from the crisis we had last year

2) My computer is in my room and it's REALLY LOUD. I have a 7200RPM cpu fan and about a half dozen other fans in my case and it isn't exactly the best thing to be around when you want peace and quiet.

Yeah so that's why I turn my computer off at night.

I leave my computer on all the time. Turning it off and on all the time can eventually corrupt your hard drive. As long as you keep it cool, it is okay. I only reboot when I have to. That's usually after installing programs and such. :p

just thought that i'd let you know that the energy crisis was a hoax. somebody in the government really needed money for some debt, and realized that he could get some money that way. just a tidbit of info.

I leave my computer running all the time. I know what you are talking about with the fan noise but it can be just like ocean waves and how it can put you to sleep. Since my computer is in my bedroom that seems to be how it happens. I understand about the power conserns too a little bit, my only problem is I'm one of the lucky ones that don't have to pay for electricity. My main reason for leaving my computer on is I have distributed.net and United Devices running in the background. I feel I should put my unused clock cycles towards something productive. Plus I think keeping everything surging with electricity and at the same temperature is probably the best thing for computer components, probably better than extreme changes. Well that's my 2 cents.

I leave it up and running....despite the 8000RPM 54Db fan and the fact I sleep in the same room as it about 5 feet away :D :D :D :D

From uptimei.exe:

Since 11/17/2001:

System Availability: 99.7391%

Total Uptime: 121d 18h:49m:50s

Total Downtime: 0d 7h:38m:41s

Total Reboots: 49

Mean Time Between Reboots: 2.49 days

Total Bluescreens: 5

i dunno what's up with the mean time between reboots. I'm considering clearing out my error log to start fresh... BTW, this is a copy of XP I installed on 9/11. If I hadn't cleared out my log in Nov, it would still say that in the readout :o

Umm no.. I wanna see some proof. I think I would have heard about it if it was a hoax. I watch the news and read the paper daily but I know some fishy stuff went down although I'm pretty sure it wasn't hoaxed.

on if i d/l stuff overnight..especialy slowass/edonkey. off otherwise. i have huge full tower metal case and that **** resonate like crazy. i even suspended both of my drives on rubber bands so they don't vibrate w/ case and ventilate better

good thing i don't have ibm drives. ibm exec said that most of their drives are designed to be run for ~250hours/month that's about 8hours/day..:ponder:

true true, and when chretien n all the premiers were in the US making deals with the US, manitoba (premier gary doer) made a deal with the californian governor that if california ever has another power crisis, manitoba hydro will provide energy to california since manitoba hydro = prov government owned power, and heard that manitoba has one of the cheapest rates for hydro in all of north america since we export more power than we use (minnesota/nd uses more of it than we do), and bc's probably like that too

Never on at night, unless I am not there. The fan noise is annoying but I can deal with noise when I sleep, after all, I do sleep with a dog who barks, farts and has running dreams through the night :D - but I just feel uncomfortable with having something that has so much power flowing through it buzzing away at night for my own personal health. I'm not basing this on fact so don't flame me, but PC's must emmit a small level of unhealthy stuff, where it be the air that comes outta of the fan or radiation. Hey, even if it doesn't, I prefer to keep the PC off because I'd just know I'd get up a mess around with it and check to see how far a download has progressed and such, I do want to maintain a life that doesn't revolve around the box, hehe. It is on all day though, downloading mp3s or an app usually, unless it's a exceptionally warm day where I'll leave it off to give the thing a rest (the fans in my PC aren't that powerful, noisy enough though)

Are you sure? Naturally, if you turn it off and on rapidly like a lightswitch then you will reduce the life of the PC, but turning it off and on in a normal way, say, on a daily basis, why would that neccesarily eventully corrupt your hard drive? HD's don't have huge life spans anyway, if it's going to "eventully corrupt" it's most likely going to do it faster if you keep in on 24/7.

And why do you think Hydro got slammed for price gouging and paid huge penalties?

About 8 months of near 24/7 uptime with two IBM drives in there (one died a long time ago, but it was due to a faulty power connector). I've got pretty good airflow going over one (the opening is right infront of it and it's COOL to the touch, the other is right below and does enjoy some cooler temps. I suppose I'm the lucky one... :D

I don't know. This might be a personal experience but my computer seem to run slower if I leave it on too long. I don't know why. But, for example, the computer they leave in shop like compusa frys gateway curcuit city (demo stuff) They leave it on all days and some crappy one can run smoother then silk then my computer. I don't get it.
