Tim Dorr Veteran Posted March 20, 2002 Veteran Share Posted March 20, 2002 woah big output! the slowness is just a result of small memory leaks and performance degradation evident in nearly all programs out there. I usually log out and in once and a while on my machine to keep things fresh and clear up some additional resources that may not have been released yet. amoeba
I leave mine on whenever I can because I run my webserver from it. I also tend to be downloading things overnight a lot. If I wasn't running a webserver or anything, I probably wouldn't leave it on. It is a proven fact that leaving electrical components on for extended periods of time causes slow-but-sure damage to the circuitry.

And to the people talking about system degradation, for me, i upgrade so often, that it's not an issue. Plus, I have 386s I've left on for quite a majority of the day that *still* work fine (well, relatively :D )

gchivers
From personal experience the only time I have ever had hardware problems has been when rebooting or when powering on, both at home and at work. I work for IBM Global Services Australia maintaining VMS/UNIX and NT systems. My favourite is our VMS system which recently reached 972days uptime before a power hit took out the site and a disk controller card on this server....sigh :-( ...I was so hoping for 1000days...ah the stability of VMS. A good think XP comes from it. I'm a firm believer in leaving them on...they use bugger all power anyway, certainly makes no difference to my power bill. Anyway that's my two cents. TechSys1
All my systems run 24/7. My daily used system runs my wintv card at night (I fall asleep watching tv). My server is running bpftp, apache, and idling in irc. The others are either in standby mode or doing some scans on the network (normally virus scans and backups)

nomis_nehc
I leave my on 24/7. Except when I leave town for many many days. I happen to have a IBM HDD, it's the 60GB one. :/ it's actually doing quite well for me. Haven't die yet ;) Right now, one thing that really ****es me off is sometimes you HAVE to reboot. Take for example, I should've restarted many hours ago, after I installed new drivers for my soundcard. But I still haven't... heh :p I wish somehow we can restart "part" of the vital system, maybe store all the data on people with enough RAM of write into HDD. :/ just a thought. Ehhh.. I don't pretend to know otherwise, but are you sure this is an issue with modern drives? I'm just thinking if this were something that people should really think about that it would be a lot more documented, I've never heard anything about HD parking degrading the life of a drive. By the way, I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying my opinion.
