mmm... when you have some lying around that you don't want, you know where to send them ;) (working of course :p)

maybe that why your HDs die.

I still have my 1.2 gigs western digital HD and WD said that a life time of a HD is 5 years. I have it since 1991 that make it 11 years on going .. Still alive!

the act that count.

Secondly, for all your ware monkey, I don't use my HDs to store warez (I know what warez is). I use it for scratch disk. Photoshop have its own HDs for scratch disk. Run smoothly when you try to work with a piece like 100 meg+. Maya has her own HDs for scratch. Same with 3DstudioMAX. Blender doesn't seen to need it so it run on my main HDs. 2 of my HDs is running a server UPC for backup the server. Secondary CPU link for backup when I shut down the first one or reboot. Last of the 7 HDs is for scrap/ backup/ junk/ downloads/ etc...

Lezend.

U obviously have an issue, if ur slowing down aftre a few days, granted what you psoted doesn't really say much for what is running, but going through and disabling unused items is not a bad idea. yes it was installed by default for a reason. that reason being to make systems user friendly. Meaning if you had a a video card lts say that's 3yrs old and lost the driver disk for it you wouldn't have to worry about it loading becasue the driver was already installed by defualt, and in many cases 6-7 variants of the driver, just incase the driver that matched the hardware signature wasn't the correct one but came close to or was include in 6-7 other models.

Don't flame people for giving advise on your system, especially when you asked for it. It's like you calling tech support and crying that somthing is broke and then getting ****ed when you don't get it fixed the way you want it fixed. If you knew the answer already why did you bother asking. I can say this becasue i do tech support 10 hrs a day, and and having been doing so for quite some time now.

As for the LCD if you have so much money to spend why don't you go buy 2 exact lcd monitors and set one up to run 24/7 and the other to be shut off with the system, and then post you results when they both fail in the next decade or so.

But as for your current situation, how bout booting to safe mode and checking their for ghost drivers. Why you may ask, I had the same situation on both my Xp systems, and removed all the drivers and installed jsut the one required and haven't had system issues, since, did the same with all my devices and haven't had a problem on the main system. However a noticable performance decrease can be seen on the secondary system which still has the ghost drivers on it.

By the way, I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying my opinion.

driving your car down the road takes miles off of its lifespan doesn't it? a hard drive is a mechanical device like any other.

i usually leave it on. since i switched cases i shut it off cause there are like 4 extra fans and a new psu and its alot louder than it used to be. and my case is right next to my bed. if it was in a different room i'd leave it on. i only leave it on if i am downloading something. or i have to like encode something that wil take all night :)

Off???? - what in hells name does off mean?

Seriously though - apart from installing some new hardware, or installing a new OS, I simply haven't got reason to switch my PC off. If it isn't downloading then it will be compiling/number crunching something - off is not a option - on is a mission critical state, so much so it isn't even on the normal ringmain and even if localy all the power went down it would still run because I once worked for a emergency power supply company and learned a few tricks and acquired a few boxes :D

well put. i mean, it is a proven fact that the computer wastes less electricity than a light bulb. it's them damn light bulbs that are sucking out all the electricity. so yeah, why not leave it on all the time?

Heh, I don't want to be a chicken-pecker guy or anything, but that sure reminded me of the past... If I recall correctly, back in 1994 (I think) I had a 386 (maybe it was 486?) and only couple megs of RAM. Man, and that time, my HDD was considered to be huge already... and that was not even 400MB. lol, I still remember, back then, it was more than enough. Games would run off cd, etc etc

I think I still have that crap somewhere... but I am sure it's dead. :D

Dead? Its only eight years old. How can it be dead? If nothing else, you could be using it to flash you're Christmas tree lights....
