what will be the final name of Longhorn?

Recommended Posts

I hope they stay away from the two letter names, i prefer Windows 2002 to Windows XP
There's a problem with though. If Longhorn were to be released as Windows 2006 it would still need to carry those two letters to distinguish versions

Windows Home Edition (HE) 2006

Windows Professional Edition (PE) 2006

Windows Server 2006 <insert overly long sub-description>

Note: Yeah I could have put 2005/6. However, Longhorn's best chance of a 2005 release is Dec 31, 2005.

Microsoft really shot itself in the foot moving away from version numbers. They really can't go back. Too many people are confused. If you ask them they would likely tell you that the next version of Windows will be 10 or 17. This comes from the fact that some [tards) count from DOS1.0 to the current Windows. Others are too dumb to know that 95, 98, and Me were all version 4.xx, W2K was NT5.0 and XP was NT5.1.

The XP was a Marketing thing like using Windows 2000 instead of Windows NT 5.0 to try and get the Y2k dollars (they missed of course on this one)

If MS really wanted to be slick with its marketing it would drop Windows completely and opt for something completely new. Even though Longhorn is still largely NT, Microsoft would do well to choose a new name and push how its a revolutionary new product. Either way the name will be run through mud whether it's Windows <insert something here>, NT-OS 6.0, or even PolishedTurd version 1.

Note: While NT/OS does look a lot more appealing than NT-OS, I bet there would be a number of lusers out there, who probably never used GNU/Linux, that would jump all over this one way or the other.

Agreed, Microsoft should really go for a new slate on this one, see if they can turn there reputation around.

I only hope that Microsoft thoroughly test it before realeasing it and make sure there are no security problems. I hate having to download hundreds of security updates that all say: "Microsoft has found a security problem in Windows that could potentially allow a hacker to gain complete comtrol of your system"

I have to dissagree on changing the product name from 'Windows' this would be very confusing to older users who ahem - some even STILL use Windows 98 and hate XP - I have come across such individuals and feel baffled at how they compare such OS's together like that. But anyway Dropping the Windows name is like dropping the logo too and loosing the products identity as a consumer Operating System on the Market Windows is an established product changing the name would cause a lot of problems for Microsoft.

When people think of Windows they generally don't think good thoughts. Windows brings to ming mind security holes, patches, patches and more patches. I read an article (will try to find it) that had an interview regarding whether or not they would use Windows or something else. There were issues with both, one of which I mentioed here already.

However, I do believe that Microsoft definitely has the marketing power to push such a product. They would of course have to actually advertise the OS rather than running a few TV spots and letting brand recognition do its thing. I mean if Microsoft can convince people they need to buy Windows 95 (including those who didn't even own a computer), I believe they could convince them to buy their next OS no matter what the name. You really don't even need to show how the product is different. Just do what Microsoft always does and show people having fun sitting in front of the computer. As long as nobody flies around like in the XP spots I'm sure people would think "hmmmm..."

Just a tip. Called it the next evolutionary step rather than revolutionary and they'll have a few less monkeys on their backs.

How about "Windows FX"? It fits with the new visual additions.. And I saw a MS employee actually refer to longhorn as "Windows FX" once, I don't know if he slipped and revealed the name or mixed it up with the API thing, WinFX, but I've never seen WinFX called "Windows FX" and I doubt a MS employee would mix the two. I think that is a cool name too.

Have you been living in a cave? MS employees are known for saying some incredibly dumb things. Nobody at Microsoft is beyond stupidity. Steve Ballmer especially.

Microsoft Windows AD (Another Disappointment)

Microsoft Windows TNVWBBWP (The Next Version Will Be Better, We Promise)

The Longhorn mess points to a recurring problem at Microsoft: Hype often gets way ahead of the company's computer science. "The priority is more on marketing than development," says Alan Paller, research director at the SANS Institute, a computer security training organization. That doesn't bode well for a company that hopes to lead the computer industry in the 21st century.
