y_notm
you mean supersets, but I understand. As of right now, yes, MCE is a superset of XP Pro, but in the Longhorn era Microsoft will make MCE a superset of Home to keep the costs of MCE systems down. Probably. Obviously, I can't say that with 100% certainty but with the increased specialization of each SKU it makes sense. It may seem confusing right now, but once SKUs and feature sets for each are finalized I'm sure it will become a lot clearer. :) The Home side of the SKU model is the easier of the two sides. I'm having a hard time imagining what differences a small business edition and professional edition would be. Perhaps THAT would be a bundling of Windows Pro and Office 12??? Thats the only thing I can think of that would be analagous to SBS (WS2k3 Std, Exchange and SQL)

canadian397
okay, I see that there is probably going to be Home, Premium, Pro, Small Business Edition and Tablet but my question is what is the differences between them. Like I'll probably get Premium for me but what is the differences between it and home?

DaveLegg Developer Posted January 23, 2005 Developer Share Posted January 23, 2005 When have you seen an OS keeping his codename? OS-2 / Warp from IBM I think if it does not keep the Longhorn name then possibly: Windows Generation 6 Off Topic: Does anyone know if longhorn contains the pointless ctrl + scroll-lock scroll-lock feature of windows xp: 1. Start regedit. 2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters 3. Create a new DWORD value and name it CrashOnCtrlScroll 4. Right-click on this newly created value and click on Modify 5. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click on OK. 6. Close regedit and reboot your system. 7. Now you can blue screen (crash) your system by holding the right CTRL key and pressing "Scroll Lock" twice. Absolutely pointless, but is it in longhorn? tra
The official name will probably be... Windows Professional 2006 Windows Server 2006 and other relative Editions Because... The client version of Windows 2003 (NT5.2) (Windows XP Professional, x64 Edition) is detected as Windows Professional 2003, in WinZip... Also several registry entries only show the product name Windows, and then the Edition, so no XP on some places...
Axel
I don't believe they'll use a year-orientated name... this will date the OS too early. To me at least, "XP" still sound pretty fresh an new... it hasn't dated as much as it would have if it was called Windows 2001!

etlove
I doubt it will be named Windows 2006, it is kind of lame. I expect it to follow of routes of having two letters to represent it like XP. Something like Windows RX (Revolutionary eXperience). 2506054[/snapback] How about Windows $$? It has two characters? I don't think they are letters though, but they bestly describe Microsoft. Even Adobe is drifting away with the release of Creative Suite. I also wouldn't mind moving away from the year thing. IK47
Get rid of the term "Windows" We need something new, something that makes Microsoft's OS special. Microsoft Client would be a good name. Leave the windows name to embedded. Instead of using years, you could use the update number to distinctify it. eg; Microsoft Client SP1 [10000022]

Are you mad? The name "Windows" is so ubiquitous, it would just be asking for confusion and chaos, to contemplate such a thing. Yes, you could have told them to do that in August 1985, but not in the year 2005.
