" X " is the universal programming 'CLOSE' symbol and also infers something 'R' rated in peoples minds..

Windows - is Microsoft Corps flagship product.

New programming is based on the Net Framework.

Also, the actual Net, or Internet, appears to be here to stay.

The GUI or Avalon is in imitation 3D.

Microsoft has inferred that they are in the Third Generation of the operating system.

Microsoft Windows 6.0

* This does not lend itself to exciting marketing. Besides six is "SEX" to the Germans! 209044.gif

Do people know that Windows XP is 5.0? Is it?

"Windows Element" or "Windows XT" Or "Windows eXTend"

* Windows Element - Sounds like one of the new glass stove tops.

* Windows XT - Sounds like a car. A sporty car, though..

* Windows eXTend - Ends in 'end'. What is extended?

i know that .net was the codename for server 2003 but I feel that .net would work here as well

Windows .net Home Edition

Windows .net Professional Edition

Windows .net Tablet PC Edition

Windows .net Media Center Edition

Windows .net AIO Edition

The server name would be different from .net for obvious reasons

Microsoft Windows XS

* Sounds like a LARGE persons clothing. (And I'm a large person, so no offence.)

windows EP

* Again, this sounds like a car. But a standard model!

64 bit windows?

* It's too early to incorporate anything specific for 64 bit computing at this stage.

Would be more like a rider - ( little red splash on box. ) 'For Win 64, etc.'

"I think, therefore I am.." Plod on..

Drop the Windows name all together and market a new name. Starting over and fresh.

Longhorn contains as many changes as windows 95 did to win 3.11, so a brand new name, not previously used makes total sense.

ok we have

Windows Side

---

Windows

Windows 2.0

Windows 3.0

Windows 3.1

Windows 3.11 (for workgroups)

Windows 95 (and all that osr2 junk)

Windows 98 (and SE)

Windows ME (otheriwse known as Windows 98 Third Edition, hehe)

Windows NT Side

---

Windows NT 3.1

Windows NT 3.51 (a version I would like to get my hands on)

Windows NT 4.0

Windows 2000 (Windows NT 5.0)

Windows XP (NT 5.1)

Even though they have user friendly names most programs identify windows xp as nt 5.1 so... my option is whatever they call longhorn it will still identify at the core as NT 6 and us techys will do the same for the sheer hell of it... I hope they do something nifty or just drop the extras and just call it Windows Professional or Windows 'product subname' you know but id like the years back but hell who knows but us techys know at the core its NT 6

PS Why is XP 5.1 there are enough changes in the os it should have been windows 5.5 or 5.51 (ala NT 3.51 hehe)

I honestly see it being called Windows XP 2006 Edition. Microsoft put a lot of money into the marketing behind XP and it would make sense to me. (Gold was 2001 Edition)

I can't believe there are some of you who actually believe that Microsoft would simply call it Windows. That's just beyond dumb. What about Blackcomb? What will they call it? I gee I know the perfect name, uh, Windows!

With the latest round of decoupling (uh that's features removed for the rest of you) it's looking more and more like Shorthorn maybe called Windows XP2 with a Shiny New Look.

Some names --

Windows: I Waited For This?!?

Windows: 95 All Over Again

Windows: You Should Have Bought a Mac

Windows: Left Wanting

Windows: Still Won't Get You Laid

Windows: FUBAR

It's not likely to be called Windows 6.0 or WindowsNT 6 due to the obvious confusion (one need only look to this thread to realise that). WindowsFX is also likely out of the equation as it would not likely fly in coporate environments (think marketing).

Windows 2006 is logical as it people would believe there to be less of a gap between desktop releases (XP to Longhorn). Not everyone knows the release date of XP and may consider counting from SP2 or SP3. Other have been hearing about 2003.

Stop pulling acronyms and names out of your butt and start thinking more realistic.
