Working on the server

Recommended Posts

Ok, no, yes, and no, so please stop trying to be smart. The only optimizations being done are at the OS level and Apache level.

Here's what's been done (from what I know):

Apache is being slimmed to remove some unnecessary modules (mod_bandwidth, mod_log_bytes, FrontPage, etc).

lingerd has been installed.

The MySQL data directory, apache log directory, and web files directory have all had their contents chattr'ed +A to remove the access time update.

Two kernel variables have been tweaked to provide for faster vm system performance under the load the server is experiencing (specifically related to page cache allocation and flushing)

The things I think that need to be done are this:

Move /tmp to ramfs

Turn off some unneeded services (who needs HTTP anyways! :p )

Turn off IPB's gzip (mod_gzip is installed, so it's being double-gzip'ed)

pfft! what would you know?! rob is the man with the knowledge!!

,Jul 20 2004, 17:01] Neowin Unoffical Spokesman? Announcementb>

Oh dear lord... you make one little sarcastic joke and you wind up creating a monster.

Official Staff of Neowin, I do humbly apologize. Next time I'll keep the jokes to myself and just light myself on fire instead:):)

yeah thats right.

i kept it simple

here is a recap of what tim said :

the server is being trimmed down. theres stuff on there we dont need. like, frontpage extensions.

the directorys are being reorganized. the access time update was removed.

the servers kernals had a few value changes, because too many people are visiting the site.

Now, what was easier to read? Tims.. Or mine? We both got the same point across :D

wind up creating a monster.

gwarrr! :cat:

I was working on my guide earlier and after my edit a whole ton of html code appeared instead of the stuff i had actuall posted

eg

site

should show as site

but it turned up as <a href=http://site.com>site</a> just like that.. that is not a normal sort of error we can expect is it?o.O

then when i went to edit that stayed there..so i fixed it and others appeared

eventually i won.. but .. how odd

oh well. back on the server issues.

Rob, just give up. Announcements are called announcements for a reason. If everyone in the world could make annoucements, there wouldn't be announcements. Just leave it to the staff, however complicated and weird it may be.

I'm just wondering.. is this the cause for at certain points to get a "page cannot be displayed" problem or is that just me tonight?

(because I installed new ethernet drivers the other day.. so not sure if that is it)

hey, i was sort of wondering what the server setup is? What kind of backbones to you have feeding this monster? Server specs? Also, could you pm me the stuff if its not too much trouble? The reason I'm wanting this info is to see how donations could be used to improve the site. (i'm meaning my donations)

The server is inside the, ThePlanet datacenter in Dallas, TX. It's a Dual 2.8GHz Xeon, 3GB of ram, 2x74gb SCSI drives in a raid and some other Dell goodies. Backbones? Currently 14GBIT total connectivity over providers such as AT&T, AboveNet, Level3 and etc, this will be extended to 20GBIT before the end of the year.

How do I know this? Well... I just know too much for my own stupid good. :p

(and it's publically availible. :p )

You know you want to give Neowin a $1000 check :shifty:
