can i delete this?

Recommended Posts

These folders are rather annoying... but to be on the safe side before I did anything stupid I thought I would ask... Is it safe for me to delete these that are circled? I'm trying to clean out some crap on my computer, thanks.

Yeah...I 2nd that. They always appear after u do a windows update. Maybe the folders contain info necessary to uninstall the hotfixes?

I believe that those folders contain uninstall info for the windows update items that you download from windows update. If you delete them you may not be able to uninstall the updates..at least that's what I think.

none of them say anything about being safe to delete-- i know what you are talking about though, like after you install ie it will leave a folder with a file-- this has a couple of files + a hotfix.exe file, then the last folder on the top is the security rollup package, anyway, i dont plan on uninstalling any fixes so does that mean im good to delete?

If you have Windows Explorer set to show hidden files, then they still show up. I have windows XP and I checked and I have about 9 folders like that. They don't really bother me because I don't do much work in the C:Windows Directory. As far as deleting them, if you don't ever want to uninstall hotfixes, then you should be able to delete them without problems, but I've never tried it, so if it causes problems, then don't blame me....I've never tried...:D

Yes they are the uninstall information for any hotfixs you aqcuired via Windows Update. Anyone who's used NT/Win2K will be quite familiar with these babys, maybe like me wondered why MS doesn't stick them out of sight so they don't clutter the Windows folder view. Can you delete them - sure you can, but make a backup copy onto CDR, or ZIP Disk if thats all that is available - never know when you may want them back. Also Add /Remove Programs in Control Panel will have a few entrys that no longer work, unless you copy the data back from your backup, or remove them manually via regedit.

Myself I wouldn't worry one little bit about them, because compared with XP itself they take up sod all space. Now if one was a backup folder created during a full servicepack install, then that folder would take up many hundreds of MBs and allows you to roll back to XP before you installed the servicepack. Then you seriously ought to consider being rid of it, just so long as your happy the OS is stable after installing the servicepack, with nothing critical broken.
