Inactive Icons

Recommended Posts

Hmmmm...Ok I dont know how to put this :) You know in windows xp when it hides the icons. well how do you get it off the bloody list ? say you uninstall the program but the icon is still on the inactive Icon list (The list I'm talking about is the one where you press "Hidden Icons" In the taskbar properties) I dont know if it came up but it bugs the hell out of me.

And well we're on that page how do you get rid of theme names (If you install a them how do you get rid of the listing in the display properties) Is there anyway to do any of this (I'm sorry If I confused anyone)

"Hidden Icons"

You'll need to delete a few values from the Registry to accomplish this. Go into Regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows

CurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify

Locate the values IconStreams and PastIconsStream in the right-hand pane, and delete them. You may also need to either close/restart Explorer.exe (through the Task Manager), or log off and back on to see it take effect.

This hits all items current and past; there's no way I know of to just edit out the invalid ones.

"Themes"

You have to delete a *.theme file to keep if from showing in Display Properties. Most tend to be added or created in WindowsResourcesThemes. Note if you mean visual styles (*.msstyles), they'd be hiding in that folder if they show up on the Appearance tab (and must be deleted/moved as well to get them delisted).

BTW, in the future it would be a good idea to post XP related questions in one of the XP forums, as General Discussion is meant for... general discussion. ;)
