A revelation for Neowin perhaps? (long!)

Recommended Posts

Yes! That is in that I want to discuss it with you guys and gals.. the community.

I was speaking to my host today (just now, thanks Tyme) about some of the perils of running Neowin. I mean the nastier side effects that mods and admin experience on a daily basis. Well.. it has come to my attention that the general "feeling" is that there seems to be alot of flaming going on around here.

Flaming is like when you completely burn down someones character publically. We have strict guidelines for this and its simply not allowed. So by flaming I mean that some people think that Neowin is turning into a rant/flamer or generally a bad place to be at.

I can mod all I want but it gets tiring when you only mod and never interact anymore. its true there are ALOT more members than there ever were in Oct 2001 and many more members mean alot more opinions. It also increases the chances of lamers and trolls getting through to have there say.

So I propose we do something about it.

a) We can be MORE strict. No more warnings, its a simple abide by the rules or you are out. (also updating the rules somewhat)

b) We can do the above and take on more mods and hope that we can achieve 24/7 moddiong of Neowin (since we are now 24/7 while admin is not)

c) We can do squat and hope it gets better/stays the same

I started Neowin with Redmak in October 2000 and I believe we have achieved many of our goals (and a whole lot more than we asked for) As you can see today from visiting the main page we the admin continue to update Neowin and give the community something to remind them why they are here. In keeping Neowin fresh and updated the admin do their part of the deal. What should we do with members that disrupt the whole process.

It has been suggested I open a hall of shame with the peoples nicks that are banned and why. Im VERY sure that alot of you are not even aware of some of the people that cause Neowin problems when we administrate it.

I would be interested in your replies. I hope I can get some insight into how you guys feel about what best can be done and the direction we should take (if any) to keep Neowin a reasonably good place to browse through.

A serious sense of agreement here. I cant believe the senseless abuse that some times hits these forums- its just nasty. I really hope some people smarten up their acts.

Perhaps a hall of shame with some ips listed... that would make a few peeps buck their ideas up.

I vote for making it more strict.

This because you can warn all the time but a month later you forget who you you gave warnings, or maybe you never seen that person do wrong before. Thoug before you kick/ban someone, please do a little research so you are absolutely certain that one deserves it. It happens all the time (not here yet i guess :)) that people get kicked but they don't really deserve it.

Don't let this great community die! Neowin rocks yeah!

I agree,

Peeps seem to flame/cause troble for the fun of it. I'm all for getting strict on there collective asses. And yep a "hall of shame" is another good one.

Its also called being popular

I'm also in favor of 'a', slightly modified. I think they should recieve *one* warning. Just one, then they're out. I think people should be warned before getting kicked out. If they don't know why they were kicked, (what they did wrong), they might try and join again.

Sometimes people just had a bad day and they explode on someone, but I don't think they should be kicked out just for one time.

If you decide no warnings, doesn't really matter to me since I don't (and never will) flame.

As you can tell, I'm pretty new here but I love Neowin!! I find the site very informative with great members.

They say...ignore and it (they) will go away. This is true but at some point there will be somone who gets a little too ****ed off and will reply...the circle has started.

The site is 24/7/365, why not moderate it 24/7/365. You have members from all over the world. You all did a great job in choosing the current moderators I'm sure, if you choose to, you would be able to find a few more mods who are just as competent as the current mods.

Just my opinion...

J

Agreed, one warning, and yer out. And some more mods.

I agree with "A" as well since it would theoretically stop all "casual" flaming/posting that leads to the problems happening right now. I also agree with the "Hall of Shame" idea since it would:

1) Deter members from flaming or spamming.

2) Embarrass the heck out of the flamer/spammer just like they embarrassed the person that they targeted.

I have a crazy idea but i've been thinking about it for some time. Just hear me out for a min.

1. I think more mods isn't quite the best idea. Maybe a few more but not any more than that. Remember, a bad mod can be 10x worst than more flamers. As shown before, a mod who gets even a little personal isn't helping anything.

2. I think a lot of flames could just toned down by removing the "Quote" button. I like the idea of having it, and it's really great if it's used for the right purpose. Think about it, when we read something that strikes a bad chord in us, and we want to lash out, the reply button is there and it encourages us to reply to a Specific comment or person. Granted, it helps in a lot of situations when we are helping someone out and quoting what he said but most often than not it is used to flame and for personal attacks. But it's kinda a double-edged sword. Can't live without it, can't live with it either. Maybe there's a way around it. We could come up with some kind of limitation on the button. What do you think?

I agree with "a" , even though it might be harder on the people that are trying to follow the rules, it'll make everyone be on their toes when in the forums.

Sometimes you just gotta put your foot down and say "No, it's not gnna be like this....period!"

I assume you mean the Quote button :p

Seriously though. I hadn't thought of that before. Quickly mulling it over resulted in me deciding that you are probably right. If people properly address their replies then in a majority of threads it would be possible to go without the reply function - and where it isn't the thread should probably be split anyway.

I would be sorry to see it go though....

EDIT: Possibly introducing an extra 'block' button that would add the user to the ignore list for the next two weeks/indefinately would be a much more sencible option?

We could build in a 10 sec delay after you click 'reply' :p.

im not agreeing with him, but maybe poster can select whether or not he has to read it all, and a page limit, once limit hit, user doesnt have to read all, just thoughts...

I was only trying to think of ways to force peeps to slow down. I think I'll drop that idea now...
