BigPaul2006
Ive always wondered what the specs were for the Neowin Server(S). Who host this site?
L3thal Veteran Posted July 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2004 They upgraded a few months ago to dual Xeon processors I believe. I'll let a mod verify this.
Marshalus Veteran Posted July 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2004 The primary server is a Dual Xeon 2.8ghz, 4GB RAM, SCSI w/ RAID (unsure of the size, i think its 73GB).

Tim Dorr Veteran Posted July 31, 2004 Veteran Share Posted July 31, 2004 $250 a month for a Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz with 2GB of Ram, Dual SCSI disks, and 2000GB of bandwidth in a top quality datacenter is insane? I think you need to some more research.... Yuxi
Wasn't it SATA RAID hard drives? Or maybe I remembered wrong.
Homer
It was SATA but the fact that IDE pulls processing power from the CPU proved fatal for Neowin as it is HD intensive. SCSI has it's own procsessor, thus letting the two main ones do their job.
BigPaul2006
so the reason that neowin periodically slows way down is not because of shotty servers but because of huge traffic?
Homer
so the reason that neowin periodically slows way down is not because of shotty servers but because of huge traffic? That and more than likely scripts/crons/backups and other various things that run at certain or entirely random times of the day.

BigPaul2006
why would they run backups n stuff during peak hours? i mean wouldnt it be more logical if they did this at like 3 AM?
WishX
why would they run backups n stuff during peak hours? i mean wouldnt it be more logical if they did this at like 3 AM? When you have a worldwide community spanning all time zones, there really isn't a "more logical time", per se. Your 3 AM might be someone else's 5 PM. You may as well say that it is Australian based on that logic, since they are up even ealier than you are. Who wakes up when you go to bed, anyway?
