Getting rid of my cell phone

Recommended Posts

I'm going to get rid of my Nokia (or as I like to call, Crapia) 3390 when my contract runs out with my provider Cingular next month.

The reason for this is I'm sick and tired of Cingular's services and the lack of good technology North America gets stuck with in the cell phone industry. I went to Japan this month and I was stunned to see that nearly everyone has a cell phone, and the cell phones are already 3G (third generation) there with features like 16-bit color, digital cameras built in, and other features. I have a used two year-old Japanese cell phone a friend gave me, and it's still more advanced than any cell on the North American market. That's so ridiculous.

What the hell are cell manufactuers and providers thinking when they short change us like this? We also pay a crapload of money in monthly bills.

My alternative? I was thinking of getting a text pager like those RIM Blueberrys (I forget the name actually). Could anyone recommend some good text messengers? Like ones where you can log into AIM or Yahoo and also send emails from? I'll just have to tell everyone in my phone book to email me now I guess :p

Down with Cingular!

All the new technology originates in Japan because thats where the manufacturers are based. That's why they have better stuff than we do.

Actually many are based in Korea as well. I know they have their reasons though. But that wasn't really my question.

ok...ask around and see who has a good service? There's more than just Cingular.

That's the thing.. I know there are better providers, but the hardware is lacking. That's why I need some text pager recommendations...

since your on gsm you can use any GSM 1900 phone. for text the BLACKBERRY would be ok, or even the motorola v101. you could also look at the NEC 515 if you want a asian style phone. the ericsson p800 is nice as a cell/pda. but for just text the RIM Blackberry is your best bet. they are just releasing a new one that works on the gsm network. i i think adds basic cell phone as well

Although I'd like to get the Motorola Accompli 009, $650 USD is a BIT pricey (being a student) so I might end up getting the Talkabout T900 2-way or Timeport P935.

Does anyone have these that can recommend them?

I have the Nokia I504M model made for Jphone. IT kicks ass. Has a built in Camera, takes very small pics from 3 feet to infinity, has a built in audio recorder, can save up to 30 minutes of music in 1 file. has a 10 hour battery life, can save over 150 pics, has about 100 melody rings, etc....

I can surf WAP enable sites, check stocks, the weather, etc...

I can send long text messages around 5000 characters, it is bilingual so you can use it in both Japanese and English.

It cose me 2man en or around $160 US, and the service is cheap as hell 10Yen per minute, 10 yen per text and picture long mail message and 2 yen per skymail (to other jphones)

I would say the reason the US has sh!t in terms of cellphones is because the US is lagging in the tech front when it comes to Cell phones or ketai as they are called here. Most Japanese like to keep in touch and it is in fact cheaper to use a cell phone here than it is to use a landbased line.

Here you have to buy a right to a land line, or lease the line, plus pay the bill and installation. It is ridiculous.

In america local calls are free, not so here in Japan. So it is better to have a cell phone so you can call anywhere you want as the price of the call is the same as the land based line!
