heads up people, Macs are coming to PC in 2 years

Recommended Posts

email: OS X will have an x86 instruction set to create a modified PC e.g a modified DELL or sony Vaio which will run the Apple OS on personal computers but the idea is being made if they want their OWN file system or a universal file system which can be used on any file system, if you dont beleive me then hear it in december 2002, thats my 2 cents for today

i disagree

this is a great move for apple/mac, as the only drawback to their os is that it has to run on a mac-hardware based system.

what drawback could there be from increasing their install base/client base?

Thanks neo1980, and for your interests in it I hope the analyst is correct, but I really have better things to do than wait for OSX to appear on something from Sony.

The technical analyst lives in the year 2000?

Hey! I have some Y2K bug software I can sell him at a very attractive price.

I'll believe this when I see it. Though, this is a constant area of speculation. Whether or not Apple will a) continue doing its own hardware/software platform or b) apple will get out of the hardware business and see their OS as direct competition to Microsoft.

And, remembering the ill-fated mac clones from a few years back, my money is on a).

Though, i would be very interesting in seeing OSX on a x86 machine... FreeBSD + friendly GUI interface = extremely enticing

IF, and this is a big IF, this is true, than it is good, as this would be the only thing that could save Apple.

I think its obvious that Steve Jobs' idea of ruling the computing domain through Hardware sans software licensing agreements proven itself flawed.

I doubt, however, that this is a true story.

oh, and good to hear Apple's going to be selling Dells in 2 years. hmmmm.... a product strategy that would effectively erase the need for what makes up 95% of Apple's revenue [hardware]. sounds like a plan.

thanks.

Alright, I think that I might have to speak on Apple's behalf. As an Apple employee I cannot confirm or deny any rumors, however I have not heard anything about Apple making a PC OS. Though it would be nice to see, I can't see it happening. Microsoft has been making OS's for decades; OS's which have been able to run on so many different types of hardware.

The beauty of Mac OS is that it is built to run on only thier hardware. This allows for minimal hardware conflicts and the appearence of a more stable OS. Let's say that Apple did make a PC version of thier OS...

If they made a PC version of thier OS they would have to convince many hardware manufacturers to make drivers for thier OS, many of which would not know what to do (also, there are sooooooooooo many different hardware components and configurations, both new ond old). Also, Mac OS programmers would have to learn how to deal with multiple types of hardware, something that they have never done.

Finally, the relationship between Microsoft and Apple is pretty good, I sincerely doubt that Apple would want to flub that up by going into direct competition with Microsoft. If there is no MS Office for Mac OS, then what can it do? Apple's largest comsumers are educational institutions and businesses. These customers like Apple's extended warranty (especially since educational sales come with full lifetime warranty), and the more stable looking OS. Also, these customers like using Office products as well as Explorer. What would be left on a new iMac if there were no further releases for Mac Office and Explorer?

No, I would have to say that Apple would be far better off by staying with thier products. Why mess with what is working. They can continue to succeed if they simply work on what they already got.
