Why are topics deleted SO fast?

Recommended Posts

Topics here on Neowin are deleted so fast...literally.

Its as if the post requires a minimum activity to stay alive.

If topics were left open long enough, they would generate insiteful and meaningful replies that usually dont come from the people who reply in the opening moments of a new topic.

Not to say that posts made quickly after the topic is made are BAD, but I think that posts should be left in the forums such that it allows a lot of people to view it to allow a lot of knowlegable people to see the topic and reply to it.

I think that there should be a longer retention time.

I'm not sure what you mean;

if you mean A) topics move of the front page of sub-forums so fast, thats because there is activity on other topics; you can't help that.

if you mean B) that we the mods delete threads fast then how is this something to complain about? We aim to keep the boards clean and un-sullied by dubious threads.

to cosmin:

specific example...

well for the past few days ive been replying in the PDA/Mobile forum...mainly the laptop related threads, giving my tips on where and what laptops are good buys.

I cant recall the EXACT name of the thread, but there was a 5 page thread which i believe had "Inspiron 8600" in the title, where someone wanted opinions on his choice of an Inspiron 8600. It was a hot topic, people were posting a lot of replies...i come back today and its gone.

to mr magoo:

A)...no i dont refer to this...i like this feature on the homepage, and i understand how it works. No complaints here.

B) clean, alright...dubious threads? well yes there are a good PORTION of threads deleted that are dubious, but there are a lot of threads that are meaningful and are worthy of just sitting around waiting a bit of time for some knowlegable people, who dont browse the forums every minute, to make a post.

Ya what are you talking about? The mods here usually only delete a thread or remove it if it is completely unacceptable. If there is a similar thread already on the forum, they close or merge the topic.

:)

We'd normally split something off if there was an issue with a thread rather than simply leave it - that is if there was a lot of good stuff in the thread to start with.

I'm guessing what happened here is just that people stopped posting in it. When that happens there's tons of other threads that bump up on top of it, and if there's enough of them it might get bumped to the next page. The reason it happens so fast is just the sheer number of topics and people posting on Neowin at any given time.

I replied to a topic with a very bad link in it, and went back to check about 10 seconds later. It says "You do not have permission to view this topic".

Another time, I saw a topic which was totally spam and later it just disappered.

Well, if you need help finding anything, let us know ;) We don't "delete" threads unless we have a reason to believe that it's against the board's rules.

We only remove threads that are against Community Rules or go so far off topic it has to be closed. That is the only time we do ANYTHING of the sort.

Seriously, we don't delete valid threads. You just have to look, maybe it moved.

lol, sometimes if its not a 'smart' topic like 'do you also eat babies?' people will just flood it with spam untill its closed, its like tradition. So even if it was allmost valid if everyone thoguht it would be closed then they would just keep posting garbage in it.
