XPSP2 on pirated copies

so whether people have legit copies of Windows XP or not,

MS will still generate a good revenue.

So that makes it okay to steal? What kind of logic is that? :/

It's not like cracking a game and where the developer will never get any revenue from the games cracked.

How different is that from an OS? If you crack an OS, how is MS going to get paid for a legitimate copy that you could have bought? Are you not denying MS their rightful dues on their software that they acquired programmers to code? Who will pay the programmers for all the hard work they do?

Erm, because a lot of people get XP whether they want it or not? Try and find a non-'whitebox' builder who will sell you a computer without Windows on it. Oops, you can't.

Also, Microsoft needs pirated copies of windows to circulate. If everyone on here couldn't use a pirate copy of XP, I doubt they'd be using Windows. More likley Linux, or an older version of Windows. Which means they don't know how to administer XP and therefore they wouldn't recommend XP to other people.

Take me for example. I have upgraded about 30 peoples computers to legit copies of XP Home. I haven't purchased XP myself, instead I use the pro corp version. There is no way I am going to pay to use Windows, when I make MS quite a bit of money.

If I couldn't use pirated versions of Windows, then I'd use Linux. I don't think Linux is the best desktop OS but it's certainly better than Win98. This would probably mean I'd have a lot more experience with using Linux as a desktop OS (I'm pretty good with it as a server, but quickly get lost when using it as a desktop), and I'd be installing that on everyones computer.

Uh, YA WRONG!! There's a computer store here where I live that sells nothing but Linux based machines. They have no Windows products, and in fact refuses to install Windows on any machine if you bring it in.

Try not to use "finalized" words.....unless you know for a fact that you "can't" get it "anywhere".

If you want proof, let me know, I'll send you the address and phone number of the store....ComputeRX.

BTW: Not every "pirate" is using a "stolen" key... all ya need to do is change the way XP installs to a "corp" version, and use a legitimate corporate key.

Yes, upgrading people's computers to Windows XP earns you a copy. In fact, since I've fixed so many computers, TVs, VCRs, etc. I wonder if I'd have a problem explaining this theory to the employees at a place like Best Buy if I attempted to just walk out with all their merchandise without paying for it. "I earned it!" Lol.

He's talking about companies such as Dell, HP, eMachines, Gateway, etc.. They simply won't sell you a machine without Windows; they can't. Your local computer shop has no such contracts with Microsoft, they're probably just installing retail or OEM copies of XP on the machines they build.

MS makes money anyways on every computer sold.

when you buy a Dell computer with Windows XP loaded,

MS will receive a percentage... or even close to the full amount.

so whether people have legit copies of Windows XP or not,

MS will still generate a good revenue.

It's not like cracking a game and where the developer will never get any revenue from the games cracked.

this is because games don't come preloaded generally on PC systems from the manufacturer.

They'll never get a cent from me! :p

yes they will, dont you buy hardware that has the little windows flag on the box? they get a few bucks from the company that asked ms to certify the drivers and rights to use the logo

I believe unless it was the same volume license keys blacklisted in sp1 it will work fine. I do not condone pirated copies but we all know someone who has and I saw it and it works fine. Again the one machine is a testbed a tech I know has. I believe there is a thread linking to microsoft that explains it in thier words from them.

I take it you quoted me, but didn't read the post???

No.....they DO NOT sell Windows. They will not install Windows. They sell PC's that run Linux....and only Linux. It's actually the only computer store I know of that is like that.

Yeah it's kinda sad now... Used to people were quiet about pirating, because they didn't wanna get caught. Now I hear people talking about it all the time when in stores and etc.

Actually they can, to a limited extent. For instance, Dell sells "Alternative Operating System" desktops in the Small Business store, but I doubt Microsoft would ever let them advertise linux to home users.

...On the other hand, Microsoft got in trouble in the past for this exact thing, although they settled out of court because they didnt want to admit wrongdoing. The issue was that Microsoft had set up deals with OEMs prohibiting anything but Windows sold on new computers. I think they even stopped selling Windows to some OEMs that had installed BeOS on new computers.

These OEMs most likely can sell home computers without windows, but they cannot afford to anger Microsoft, who would do anything they could get away with against the OEM

On Topic:

I thought they were only considering blocking WU for pirated keys, not SP2 itself

Its so common now. Any kid can download the latest game off kazaa (figure of speach - pirate or not you know that won't work) and give it out to their little friends. It spreads faster then wildfire.

I would have thought that it would only take one person who has tried installing SP2 on a pirated key to settle this thread, but I guess not. It seems that many have, and it works, so thats the end of that. It only makes sence. If SP2 is aimed towards security, how would it be secure to let a bunch of pirated machines sit on the internet infected with the latest MyDoom varient. Yeah, it wouldn't be. So it only makes sence that microsoft lets even the pirates install SP2. Wasn't there a new post on Neowin some time ago saying M$ was taking flak with their initial decision to NOT allow pirated keys? Logically, they decided to suck it up, take a few losses for the team and allow the pirated keys.

Actually, Dell is selling Linux desktops as well as HP recently announced that they will as well. Don't think that other major companies won't as well soon. Especially with the ease of use of SUSE and LinSpire. In Europe, governments are turning to linux based PC's for their employees, a Dell subsidiary is offering home based DeskTops with Linux on them.

I remember reading an article stating that if Linux can grab a 10% chunck of the home market, then gaming companies will be forced to start porting to Linux as well, and when that happens, I'm scrapping Windows. Although, now I'm using Mandrake 10.0, I still have to use Windows for gaming. I'm not Windows bashing, but I do believe Linux to be a far superior operating system.

haha, it was always warez. its much less so now. this forum burst into popularity in the summer before XP was released, and more people were concerned with illegitimate copies (that were already out by august) than by the retail october release

also, it seems like more people on here (and other forums/internet communities) pirate so much because the demographics overlap so much. people who never use computer-topic forums overlap with the people who never pirate. (which is most people i.e. n00bz! omg! h4x! )

Blame the hardware manufactures for keeping Linux down. Probably 90% of the driver support issues you hear about are from the companies releasing all their info to MS (obviously), but keeping their hardware specs locked to Linux.
