Microsoft helps SPAM!

Recommended Posts

My Observation of the Week:

Lets think about this. Microsoft is on over 80% of all desktops and is the default mail client for most. How come Microsoft hasn't added and spam filters to any of it windows based mail clients? In Office v.X for OS X, Entourage has a junk mail filter, why not in Outlook XP? How come once you take your time to make manual mail filters for spam in Outlook Express, you can't import/export them to Outlook? I recently tried another mail client called pocomail and there were somethings that just made me go back to Outlook Express (besides the $20 fee, pocomails junk mail filter worked great, I am just picky). If people didn't respond or even see SPAM then there would be no point in sending it right?! I know there are 3rd party SPAM tools and SPAM eaters that you run first and such but WHY hasn't Microsoft added filters to Outlook Express and Outlook?

I'd like to know!

Outlook has the junk email lists. It also has the most powerful rules creator I have seen in a while.

Try making a rule that deletes/moves any email with "unsubscribe, opt-out, unsolicited, or click here" in the subject or body. Make an exception if the sender is in your Address Book.

Try making a rule that deletes/moves any email "where my name is not in the To box." Again, make an exception if the sender is in your Address Book. A lot of spam has strange headers etc and your email address is very rarely ever found in the "to" box.

I make it move anything found with the above filters to a junk folder. I just check it once at the end of the day to make sure a legitemate letter hasnt slipped through. But as long as you have all the mailing lists and friends/co workers in your Address Book you are pretty safe.

I get about 20 spams a day, and only 2-3 actually dont get filtered out per week.

Hope this helps. The best tip is to never ever ever ever give out your email address, or if you have to just create a spam account that you dont mind giving out. People harvest address's from EVERYWHERE you can think of, off forums like these, newsgroups, websites etc.

As far as I recall, Microsoft did try to add spam blocking to Outlook Express (version 5?). But it was taken out before the beta period ended when an electronic greeting card company sued MS because the filter blocked their greeting cards. :(

Kibler: I have rules set up and so forth so stop most spam but alot gets through. But we here at neowin are above average, we understand headers and fields, but the average joe (no offense to anyone here named Joe) doesn't so they will just keep getting spam. Ya know!

Gumboot: That was bluemountain and they are now a paysite and have been sold a few times over so it might not be a problem any more.

Well if what Gumboot says is true then I guess you cant blame MS for not trying. There just isnt any perfect way to filter out spam without letting a few bad messeges through and blocking some legitimate email.

Ok... if we talk about SPAM filter, I'd like to know a program that not only filter a certain mail and put it in junk folder or something... I want a blocker that actually block the e-mail so the post office will tell them that the e-mail does not exist... now that's the kind of filter I need... those that allow those junk mail to get in your mail box in the first place isn't a filter... Simply put, if those SPAM filter does not block those spams or isn't capable of banning the spammer's IP, then those are crappy ware any ways...

Anyone agree... anyone come across such ware?
