I think we have been through this many, many, many times.

However to answer your question, I format as often as necessary.

If you keep your system clean, and defragged, there isn't any reason that you can't keep an install for at least three months.

Edit: There are reasons, but not for the average user.

you need to skip 1 a day!

and 1ce a week isnt logical!

Maybe 1ce a month

1ce every 3 months

1ce every 6 months

1ce every year

or i dont know what is format

this is a more logical approach

but i format about every 3 to 6 months

There was a time when i couldn't decide between Win2k and XP, so i must have formatted about once everyother day for about 2 weeks until i finally settled with XP, now i format about once a month to keep everything running smooth. Reinstalling programs isnt really a pain since there are only about 3 or 4 which i need to reinstall.

2nd loads of talk about NTFS here and heard loads of good things about it in college made me curious about it so what the heck format and love it:D

3rd hdd died heh format again

and probably tuesday get rid of VIA and get ASUS nForce with some 512DDR pc2100 and install fresh xp pro copy again since i dont like left over drivers hangin about prefer quake3 to run very smooth and fa:) :)

about every 3 months. usually after 2 i decide that I need to format, then I take a month procrastinating and getting mad at the computer for not working right. then I decide that I Have to do it.

On one of my machines I have had Win98SE running for close on 3 years .

With a proper maintenance regime it is still running as fast as it always has .

WinXP Pro on my main machine even with defragging , and cleaning up all temps and caches etc seems to start to slow down after about 4 weeks.

I have Winxp Pro running on 2 PC's and its the same for both.I have not been able to work out what causes this gradual slowdown. One machine there has been no installs/ uninstalls done since I last did the OS and it still gradually slows.

It is most obvious in Internet explorer.

I must be overlooking something obvious.

Anyway I am about to give Linus a try ,why? just to play and to see what all the fuss is about .And some retro fun will be a laugh.

Regards
