Forum Upgrade?

no way.

have you SEEN 2.0?

Yeah. I currently use the IPB Skin Set 1.2 interface / theme on this board and really don't want it to change. It is very "usable" for me.

I'm just a wimp when it comes to change. Sorry. :(

Lee,Aug 19 2004, 08:24] Are you stupid? Ever heard of making a backup?

Neowin aren't stupid and will backup everything before upgrading. So if it goes wrong nothing will be lost.

What is this "backup" you speak of? I will have to consult the administrators to see if they know about making this "backup."

Is there a sort of an upgrading road map for this?

There's no timeline, but the basic steps are these:

- Duplicate neowin database

- Upgrade the copy database to the IPB 2.0.0 schema (this will probably have to be customized, because of changes we've made to the 1.3 schema) and get it running as a vanilla 2.0 install

- Hack away at the base code for 2.0.0 until it meets the required featureset for the project. (this involves skinning and customizing the 1.0->2.0 upgrader as we make schema changes)

- Remove the duplicate db, make a new copy, and re-upgrade the database to test things for the live upgrade.

- Make a backup and do the live upgrade.

That's the basics of it. Steps 2 and 3 are the involved ones that require a lot of hacling and work to get everything functional the way it's desired. The diff on the 1.3.1 code versus the neowin code base is quite big ;)

It baffles me why people are so hot and heavy to jump into a new version when the current version works pretty darn well. Why disrupt the whole community just so you can keep up with the Joneses? Besides, 1.3 is still free, right? Why pay for 2.0 if 1.3 works fine fine for you?

I've already upgraded another forum from 1.3.1 to 2.0 PF2 and it's much easier to moderate. Seems faster too. Less queries, better code, etc. I think in the bigger picture, it will not only improve the overall impact on our servers, but make it much easier for moderators and admins to do their jobs. That's no small feat for a community this size! The search is improved quite a bit too, so that will help the users (if/when they use it :p ).

Sure, it's going to be a bit of work to make the transition, but I think the benefits totally outweigh just "keeping up with the Joneses" or having to have the latest release.

I agree with the above.. you can state 'if it isn't broke, don't fix it', but if the newer version contains so much improvements, why not just upgrade? It will be tested extendedly before the main site will see the update.
