I have to say that I firmly stick by XP Pro for it's outstanding performance but I have to give credit where it is due... for pure speed preference only, 2000 SP2 is actually the faster... though XP is much better for stability and everything else, but u can't deny the speed of 2000

Fastest for what? I don't believe any one can be an overall fastest.

If you want a mail or web server, a unix. If you want games, possibly windows, possibly unix...

Also, the 2 Linuxes should be identical I think. The different packages won't affect speed of core programs.

The fastest OS is Win98 by far.

Too bad it's pure crap.

I swore off 9x OS's when Win2k was released.

Win2k, WinXP & OSX for stability.

Not to mention quality.

Early Linux kernels were fast, but they drag ass now.

BeOS is just SLOOOW. Maybe it was my install...

windows xp for me since my computer sux and its actually pretty fast/stable for the computer, ive only had a few times where win xp froze and i had to restart, either than that, havent had that many problems compared 2 win 98....cept ie freezing n tabs on mozilla causing a problem

BeOS 5 was clearly the fastest OS ever, booted in like 3 seconds on my computer. Too bad BeOS sold all their stuff to Palm, which they have not released an update yet.

However, I own Windows XP and 2000, too bad I only use Windows 2000 server. XP got taken off when I formatted last time.

Speed, I will have to say windows xp, but with my experience i have to say that windows 2000 is the most stable that i have used so far, for the desktop. I had less crashes in 2 years with 2000 than I did the first time installing xp.

ps. My XP is working fine now, and I like it.

u guys with 1ghz+ procs shouldn't even be talking... u can't tell the difference between OSes, unless it's some linux-type that takes up hardly any resources

well it depends on ur pc. if u have a good system 1GHz+ and 256mb ram winxp will be faster. but if u have a much older system win2k will be faster than xp because xp runs too slow on old systems.
