i've only used a few of the OS's listed long enough to make a decision... and XP kicked all their asses...

however there are a few on the list that might be faster than XP

All the linux flavours are usually faster than windows b/c you can't install anything on linux. Most people (and I hate this) have about 20 things that start up with their computer, eating memory and CPU cycles (ie realplayer startcenter, winamp agent, bonzi buddy, and stupid crap like that). I'm not trying to say that you can't install lots on linux, just most stuff tends not to load those sorts of resident, start-up programs.

Windows is not optimized out of the box either, in order to increase compatibility with all the hardware they need to support.

Well, lets see here, I have WinXP running on a 233Mhz with 96Mb of RAM, 4gb ATA/2, 1Mb Stealth 64 card, and it fricken flies like nothing. Runs a lot smoother and faster than Win98SE did on it, and I doubt Win2K runs faster. Oh, I have it set to best appereance too with welcome screen, and it runs smooth. XP will run great on older machines. Just takes longer to install of course =P

Thats true for all Windows systems -> out of the box or optimized?

WinXP Pro optimized runs great, especially if you only let about 2 things run in the background...

Win2k is the same, although I have always seen a big performance hit with SP3. Maybe it just doesn't like some of my software...
